This is a guide for beating conquest in 1939 as the Soviet Union.
1. Introduction
So, why should you choose the USSR for a 3-star? Few simple reasons.
- you start between Germany and Japan, which can allow for a quick win but is also a bit annoying without good generals. More on that later.
- you start with an insane economy, 717$/136¤/6* compared to the United States: 635$/128¤/8*
- you start with many strong generals including but not limited to: Rokossovsky, Konev, Govorov and Kuznetsov.
- you start with relatively strong artillery forces.
There are negatives- but they are not of significance.
- your entire navy is 1 destroyer + Kuznetsov. Thankfully you aren't an island so this is not a concern.
- it can be difficult to deal with the 2 fronts at once, which is why my recommendation is to surrender some of your eastern lands to Japan and retake them later.
- most of the strongest axis generals except for Japan's will be coming right for Moscow. Thankfully you are the best artillery country so you shouldn't have much trouble with them.
2. The Early Game
The first thing you should do on turn 1 is look to the south. Use Kuznetsov to capture the Turkish port in the Black Sea for 10$/6¤ for free. Send your other destroyer there as well. You'll be participating in the Mediterranean Sea bloodbath later on.
Pull your Minsk and Kiev units to the Polish border, but split some of the force to attack Romania and start rolling out your units near Moscow.
On the eastern front, evacuate Shaposhnikov from the city immediately and move him near Khabarovsk. You'll be holding out a siege here and falling back to Yakutsk later.
Build an Institute in Stalingrad. You'll need a lot of industry and tech later on for missiles.
Make sure not to move Bagramyan out from Riga.
When you end your turn, Germany will do all the normal things, relentlessly blitzkrieging the Benelux and Poland while attacking Yugoslavia. For now, just send your units into Poland, but not very far. You should now have 747$. Use the money to build the following things:
- A howitzer in Donetsk
- A howitzer in Kiev
With these units built, you'll have 297$ left. Build an Institute in Chita and in the unnamed city to the north of Chita. Don't move Bagramyan. Save the remaining 97$.
On turn 3 there are a few things you will notice. Firstly, the german general Paulus is now in the water near Riga and has somewhere around 200 health left. Take advantage of this by using your motorized infantry near Leningrad and Bagramyan to attack him while he's weak. Secondly, the Japanese have now captured one of your cities on the eastern front and is now attacking Khabarovsk. Don't worry, this is intended. Fall back to Khabarovsk and defend there.
Keep building howitzers in your 4 main frontline cities: Minsk, Kiev, Donetsk, Leningrad
German generals will push through the couer d'Polougne, but with your artillery you should be able to stop them from pushing far into soviet territory.
Always attacks generals first before prioritizing normal units, since generals will still be a threat at low health, but normal units are just fodder then. Now, let's talk about artillery. The niche of artillery, as you likely know, is the trait 'Firepower' and their 2 range, allowing them to attack at range without retaliation from the enemy. Howitzers are quite expensive, however. Costing 225$, they aren't cheap, but you get much more than you bargained for.
Artillery are your main tool to take over Europe.
After pushing into Poland, you've hopefully stolen some cities and maybe even captured a Romanian city. Your artillery is starting to pile up, but the germans still have plenty of strength. You've entered the long and arduous journey that is:
3. The Middle Game
Continue doing what you were doing, building howitzers, factories and institutes. It clearly worked if you got here. The most important cities to capture are Krakow, unnamed Romanian city, Budapest and Warsaw (if applicable). Do NOT capture Königsberg. The german AI will defend it with their life for some reason. Make light attacks at it, as this will waste the german resources.
Don't go a turn without building at least 1 howitzer. The turning point is taking Vienna, Prague, and Berlin. Once there cities are taken, you can make heavy tanks in central Europe, and the german resistance has crumbled.
As soon as you reach HQ level 6, build tons of institutes and factories in your rural cities in Siberia. Level 7 allows missiles.
Italy and Spain will rush to Germany's aid. France in Europe is likely already defeated, but they are still fighting in Africa along with the English. They will eventually be defeated by Italy and Spain, but should be able to slow them down significantly. After taking Germany up to the Rhine and defeating Romania and Hungary, you can start investing resources on the eastern front. Build tier 2 factories in some cities and create medium tanks.
After a long, long time you should have defeated Spain in Europe. From Spain, you should paratroop into Algiers. From here you'll be using air forces and missiles primarily. Take northwestern parts of Africa and continue into Japan. Once you take Pyongyang, build a missile silo there. North and slightly east of Pyongyang is an unnamed city, which was previously taken by Japan. Build an airport there. Use missiles on Nagasaki, Sapporo, and the unnamed city south of Sapporo. Paratroop into them. Take the tier-3 port near Tokyo with a few submarines.
3. The Late Game
Now it should be just Italian Africa, Spanish Africa, Japan and potentially Thailand left.
By now you should have unlocked nukes. Build 6 and use them on Bangkok, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nanking, Peking, and Cairo.
Once these cities are taken, it's just a clean up job. Japan has probably taken some ports in the north and maybe Midway. Either way, you should have no issues defeating them now.
Congratulations!
