I thought Portugal was the first one to recognize our nation, but i guess the Dutch beat them to it! To that, I salute you Ducthmen! Did the Dutch send any aid to the Americans in the American war of independence or did they just fight against the British in Asia and other areas of the globe?

History Lesson ---------------------------------- Before Most Americans forgot that the American Revolution did not succeed if there were no Dutch. ''Erm, they did not fight, maybe they threw some clogs to the British'' you may think. You are right, but we the Netherlands had (and still have) the tiny island (2000-3000 inhabitants back then) of St Eustatius. There has always been trading with neighboring countries and islands, also with the British American colony. The British were happy with our trading but things changed when the USA became independent. There was no weapon industry in the USA (I refer to them as USA but I know it is historically not right) and the USA could not import gunpowder and weapons because the British would sink their ship, however we cunning merchants transported it to St Eustatius and then sold it to the USA. The British and there admiral George Rodney were 'not amused'. The island often referred as the Golden Rock was profiting of the high war needs in the USA, for that reason George Rodney hated the island and it's inhabitants. Sometimes ships were sank but the profit was high so we didn't care that much. The USA was totally depending on our merchandise: they could not import from other countries and they could not make the weapons themselves. The UK started whining so the Dutch Republic forbid the illegal trade with the USA, of course the trading continued and the merchants continued trading, the island rulers didn't care since the trading with the USA was very lucrative.
The First Salute The new ruler Johannes de Graaff was now the boss of the island, a arrogant but nationalistic man. Life was normal on the island, but everything changed when the American ship the Andrew Doria came to the Gallow Bay. They saluted the Golden Rock with their guns. Now de Graaff was in a difficult situation, the USA just declared independence and saluting back would not be only recognizing the USA as interdependent state but also threatening the neutrality of the Netherlands and a laugh in the face of the UK. We liked the Americans and de Graaff ordered to fire 11 salute shots and then have a feast for the captain of the ship. The British were furious, they demanded that the Dutch parliament fired de Graaff. Teh Dutch parliament asked de Graaff to come to the Netherlands sp they could interrogate him. In 1778 he came to the Dutch Republic with a paper with 200 pages claiming he did not see the flag of the ship and blablablabla. The Dutch Government was happy sent him back to the island. Meanwhile the British had found a Dutch-American treaty on board of a hijacked ship, NETHERLANDS!!!!!!!!!!! The United-Kingdom declared war on or tiny country because we wanted to help the USA.
After The British Admiral George Rodney was given the task to conquer the island, he was euphoric with his new task. to quote him: "This rock, of only six miles in length and three in breadth, has done England more harm than all the arms of her most potent enemies, and alone supported the infamous rebellion... When I leave the island of St.Eustatius, it will be a barren a rock as the day it erupted from the sea. Instead of one of the greatest emporiums on earth, it will be a mere desert and known only by report." He had still a trauma: During the battle of Martinique they heavily damaged the French ships but at the breaking point of the battle tiny Dutch ships came from St Eustasius and repaired the French ship. In 1781 he sailed with 18 heavy battleships to the island and the island surrendered. The whole population of the island were treated as POW. Some people (especially the Jewish) were sent to labor camps in surrounding islands. All worthy items were captured by the British.
The Revenge The big money stash they had captured from St Eustasius was on the way to the UK captured by French boats. Also Rodney had serious disease and hated the island so much, he wanted to destroy the island and the Dutch republic. As highlight a ship with ''British soldiers'' arrived at the island, once the soldiers were on the island it appeared that they were French. In the confusion the French took over the island, restored the Dutch power and reconquered many lost possessions. And still today the painting of de Graaff hangs in the government building in New Hampshire. After that the French took over as main ally of the USA.
