As we vote for the best special unit and not the easily affordable special unit, I'm really surprised that no-one gave his vote for tanks yet I don't see any rivals. Among infantry Redshirts are great. Tsar's cannon is the best all-around unit among unique artillery units. Krupp canon doesn't have many vote's either while it has the highest damage in the game. Unfortunately, I've seen it only ones in action. If I'm not mistaken it was one of Birth of Empire missions.

Krupp cannon, not really good,if you considered that it can't defend or attack at one hex. It really needs a general with an healing item to survive long, same as with rockets. The biggest difference between Krupp and rockets,is the former you have to unlock, the latter, only upgrade factories. By the time you've unlocked the Krupp, you generally used up all artillery generals. It's the same with the tank you just aren't going to use them. And i remember that you need city level 6 to use krupps and tanks

Horse Grenadier guard imo. Put Murat on one and he will deal absolutely horrendous damage to cities. Can really really quickly wipe out Spain during the Peninsular war in conquest.
Old guard is second.
Marmaluk cavarly is also another badass option for a strong general. The ability to heal allows for consecutive attacks on cavarly. Really strong in my opinion.
Finally, highlanders. Huge defense allows them to take hold cities super well.

Highlanders? If I remember correctly their defense is lower even if compared to line infantry. They are great to attack not to defend. They are cheap attackers.

They are much more expensive population limit wise.

Great defense plus defense against cavarly plus good health makes them a good unit to put inside a city to defend. Plus the population cost. I like them, even enough to stick a general on them in certain situations.

Their good defence on cavalry could be attributed to,they used pikes, very effective on cavalry, not so good used against infranty. But,they used firearms as well, and the bagpipes was used to instill fear on cavalry. On further opinion,Highlanders are not as good as normal units, such as,grenadiers,or elite infantry.

Surprised no one said death head husssars. With my cav team three hussars are unstoppable. Hitting two people is very nice. And slightly more useful than cossacks. Although they are very nice too. Without generals i like the canadian militia only 3 population limit and everyone gets half a medpack. Aside from my general units i spam these when playing canada. Sure, big units hit hard, but many ants ruin a picnic.

Could be,death head cav,you have to "unlock" first, iirc. Then, they cost alot as any cavalry unit does. Since speed is key,in most situations. Lancers or other normal cavalry, would be less cost and effective, if paired with an aura gen, imo. Lancers are particularly good against weakend units btw.
