I newly bought Scarnhost. I need to know how to upgrade skills. I saw another man in this forum having 5 stars in all unit types except that archery target. There’s nothing left to be added, except this: the Training-stars are the only ones you can’t increase by regrouping a trainer to your general. That’s why the guy you saw had all upgraded but not the Training-stars. Edit: For the big majority of generals it’s a waste of medals to upgrade more than one or two abilities. Most are best on one obvious unit, depending on skills. Some can be used on an alternative unit, when they have universal skills that work on all units, for example Siege or Spy. And very few hybrid generals like Poniatowski are really usable on almost every unit.

And on Marshal Forwards' note, you're best off increasing the stars of the unit(s) the general is good at, movement (movement is universal) and, depending on the number of slots you have, increasing the business stars of one general to 5, or buying a general with 5 business stars (with 5 business stars you can buy items in campaigns for 80% of their original price, and trading resources becomes much much easier)

On this matter,I recommend balancing your general's abilities. For example, prioritising Sophia is crucial as Isabella starts off better in terms of art*.Maxing out sophia ensures easy sieging asap. And sophia's movement.Get the oak wheel for her. You'd need her to cover Isabella from those pesky navy.Better to have two similar generals to backup each other rather than depending only on the op one

While Sophia is easy to achieve Isabella is counted to the elite princesses. Nevertheless Sophia is more irreplaceable. No matter what, campaigns or conquests, you nearly always need to capture cities, as a mission target or for income. There’re very few defensive missions w/o expansion. In naval and landing operations Spy is also crucial to get rid of coastal forts. So Siege and especially Spy are necessary skills. And for both IMO Art is better suited than Inf or Cav. Either to attack one round earlier or to avoid retaliation of a strong city defender.

Any other gens I use (usually 2 of Dobeln/Ushakov/Collingwood, sometimes Kate) are always situationally used. In land only missions for instance I use Dobeln + Collingwood for instance

I think people forgot about Sokolnicki. Even though he is scharnhorst clone minus 2 stars in artillery, the trainer skill, and training stars, he is still miles better than both marmont and grouchy. I mean marmont is good but accurate > explosives.
I still would not recommend him. He is 560 medals and has pretty bad stars starting out. But you get him in the 1812 conquest and if you can keep him alive, he will have 3 hex movement on rockets.

Still, a decent starting gen if you need an artillery general and he shows up in the academy (assuming you aren't willing to continue farm for resets)

If you want an game scharnhorst, imo the original is a way better option due to the training stars. But yes, he isn’t a bad starter at all, although he is pretty lacking in stars. Longterm wise, just pretend he is moreau

You buy him and mid game, he’ll sit on your roster and do nothing. Because the princesses are way better.
