When there are good generals, there are also crappy generals. Today, I am going to answer the question; Is Kesselring any good? Well let's find out.
The first thing that is obvious to the player is that Kesselring is an air force general, meaning that he is good when he is stationed in a city with an airport. A general is nothing without a good unit to be on, which Kesselring has: infantry. He has four stars in the infantry category to begin with, though this can be upgraded to five later on.
Kesselring, like every general, has three skills to start off with: Architecture, Explosives, and Air Force Leader. Architecture is quite a good skill for a defensive commander. Explosives, as proven in many tests in the past, is absolutely useless on an air force general. And as for Air Force Leader, now that it can trigger, it is easily the best skill in his set. There are a few recommended skills for Kesselring. Infantry Leader can be used to pump up attack in defense when it triggers. Carpet Bombing is a no brainer for an air force general. An economic skill wouldn't exactly hurt, either.
On the battlefield (in reality, his station city), he is able to keep hold of a city with Architecture, which is one of two required points for a defensive general. The other is decent air attack, which he nails right in the head sometimes. As an offensive general, he ranges from mediocre to just plain awful, depending on what you do with him. Offensive movements are the only time in which Explosives is used, which is a decent consolation for a good skill. Basically, just stick to defense with this guy.
In conclusion, Kesselring is good at what he does, and not much more. When he is used like he is supposed to, he makes a great defensive air general. His skills (well, most of them) are easily his strongest points. But Explosives and his overall flexibility, plus the fact that he can't have six stars in the air category, lets him down. Overall, he is a good defensive general, but not much else. He gets a 6.5 out of 10.
Mr. Best

if you are ever going to get him then carpet bombing is the only sensible skill I guess

This was a nice, detailed summary of Kesselring's abilities. It also gave me insight on Explosives as I thought that Explosives work on air, too. Oops

I’ve heard that Kesselring is trash, but I doubt that now, as he definitely has potential

I’ve heard that Kesselring is trash, but I doubt that now, as he definitely has potential he's pretty ok when you fully upgrade him, as I have tested out in a mod. Thing is there are much better candidates, and wc4 has rather limited generals space as juxtaposed to other ET games, hence unless you really like this general he wont be of much use over others

Nope, he's not good either. 5 star air is not that outstanding. 4/5 star infantry and 3/4 artillery would also be useless when you use him as defensive general. Architecture is an awful skill even for defensive generals, try it out yourselves, you won't find much use of it (if not completely useless). And lv4 architecture is the skill that makes him expensive while still not good at anything. I would happily buy Dowding over this guy as he has more quality and less expensive.

Dowding IS better, but even he won't last once you get Arnold. He is the best air general for a slightly higher price than fully discounted Dowding.

Situationally, architecture is useful with weaker enemies. But with strong enemy gens or heavy enemy spams, then its utility plunges. As always, infantry defensive generals have no seats left in the musical chairs of wc4 gens, and not even for air where they supposedly can move quickly between cities for full air coverage (things such as tanks destroy them on the move)

Though artillery has less health, they luckily do not receive damage bonuses from any other units, so they are commonly relied upon as air supports. Tank air gens are ideal, but where anyways can we find a capable tank air gen? Monty? Nahhh

I only use Dowding now for speed runs or tough conquests where I need more resources. Guess he will be doing backstage administrative work for most of our HQs...

May remind you that he's an artillery gen as well?

Exactly, even Dowding (which is not so great) can beat Kesselring with cheaper price.

With multiple units or stronger generals, or tanks, this skill becomes useless
