The decision lies within their cost. If you are concerned about medals (which you shldnt since they are fairly easy to farm) then Nicholas may serve as an okay beginner gen (tho id rather get vazov)

I don’t see why buying him would be a good idea. Ivanov, who can also be used for History Mode, is considered a must-have general and even the first one that you should buy. I have both. The benefit over Hotzendorf comes from the fact that he can reach Emperor rank, and has higher output *if you can spend the textbooks*

Yeah but the cost can be sued on your gold art generals.Plus,Hotzendorf reaches only Prince which is more than enough for an art general and no skill change for me(After the update maybe PF to JF)

getting medals is easy, getting silver medals and books is harder so it's just better to buy the most expensive arty generals (hindenburg, beseler, ivanov, leopold)

TBH, really isn't that bad. Reaches Emperor, starts at prince and L Gen. Replace Explosives with Salvo and he is like a worse Leopold, who is the best Arty Gen. Cheap.

Actually, I got him as my starter Artillery, I'm not replacing any of his skills, but bumping them all up to level 5 immediately makes him pack a pretty punch. I maintain as with Leopold that Land Fort + Counter is a great option, as you can make him into a (guess what) Land Fort. Defense and HP are very high, I love his rank and title, the real selling point of him. He won't be good for the endgame, being (as opposed to 160 ability Ivanov) only 111 points. His Explosives is Mediocre, and he has no flat damage skill, so he will be lacking in that department, but his survivability rocks.

Douglas Haig makes sense as a city defender. Jackson is ok in cities but usually Station is swapped for PS. The strength of arty is range and anti city. Having an arty gen that camps in cities and has counterattack to intentionally expose itself to inf and cav makes no sense. Especially on Field Arty. If you want a cheap city defender keep Jackson's Station or buy Haig, whom I know isn't cheap but can also fight on plains and be a decent attacker.
