I'm amazed - I thought he's one of the IAP's looking good but in the end only a lucky puncher. His speed: For a starting general he's missing one move star to be fast. To see him moving 6 Hex on Heavy Cav: 2000🎖 (2 saddles + 2 Dietz) and - if heavy cavalry might be acceptably - he can't move 100% free as he's missing Leadership His output: Base Att+ +1 give high output and AssultArt - looking really nice ... But: ...- only in plain open field - one tree and the dream is over - without siege mater he will be lousy against cities - even Assault Art can't help as it doesn't rise your output - only your chance of a maximum damage - even his stat. average will be only 2% higher thanks to Assault Art - on a low base as in too many situations he will be lousy I thought- he's crap But I know your detailed analysis will convince me I think crap is a bit harsh. It seems there are two main groups of people on this forum that either think davout is hands down the best iap, and there are also people who think he is above average, but not much better. He really needs 1 diez (3 hexes on heavy/siege artillery and 4 hexes on gaurd cavarly). Afterwards, his movement will be acceptable due to geography and you can strap on two output items. Ask yourself this, who is better, Davout with Flinklock, or Radetsky with a War Horse. The result will be Davout, with the occasional occurence when Radetsky is attacking into lvl 7 cities and Davout’s assualt art didn’t trigger. And a cavarly general without a war horse is extremely frustrating to use. Furthermore, other than Davout (or the hybrid based Lannes and Poniatowski) the only other good cavarly general with geography is Berthier... a huge pain to regroup. And he is really davout w. strike instead of assualt art. A marginally better davout. Plus if you flank a tough general like suvorov with another unit, you end up with davout dealing 89 damage vs Suvorov’s puny 37. He is definitely a good general. Calling him mediocre would be a lie. I mean Sakurako has only 1 good skill on cavarly and she can be pretty good. Whether or not he is great is up to the user. Crap is a harsh word - just my first thought. That he needs a trainer - yes (1,4,7,10 are the important steps of movement for cav and artillery (with items) I always change items for movement and attack - I don't attack with two saddles or war horse if I can use snair or pistols. I also just have only one war horse because I can't use two. If Assault Art triggers it gives you the max possible damage - this doesn't help if evasion or low morale lower this damage - he will only hit hard on open field - very situational - but then hard (if you train him) Against a lvl7 city he will be horrible and vulnerable too. He costs 8 Shields - needs a lot of investment - and you get a: 'not so bad - but his max output can be sometimes amazing and he even can move 6 hex on heavy cavalry - for what? - searching enemies without evasion? I won't say cxxp anymore this yes, but for me 8 shields are too much - this is not his league.

Imo that is a bit unfair, as there are many many generals that can be good without bugle type skills. Dumouriez is a fan favorite starting cavarly general who lacks strike. Lusignan also has mass fire and nothing else. Marmont. Even Raevsky lacks strike and he is definitely an underrated general. While strike is a good skill, a general with strike and nothing else can be at most slightly above average as we see with sakurako. Sakurako stands out due to her movement and training stars more than due to her bugle, strike, accurate skill set. As for geography, both of the war horses, which are 700 medals each, will go to the princesses. On to lan, the other two sophia. A general without geography can move pretty fast if given 5 stars movement and then an item like the saddle after. But that will easily get tedious and expensive. Furthermore, not having geography will sometimes cripple the movement in one direction, taking away up to 2 or 3 hexes of movement. This can be quite a pain. I’ll post a screenshot comparing davout and sophia with the same movement. And the only cavarly general with geography is berthier who if you want to farm 5000 medals for, be my guest. But that is too big of a gap for most people. Especially considering how tedious Diez is. While art is a skill that cannot be trusted to trigger everytime, it still happens quite frequently. If you get davout to max morale and the flank a strong general like napoleon, davout’s assualt art will most likely trigger, and napoleon will lose almost a 100 hp. If you help davout by flanking other units, he will have great damage. Lastly, at low healths, assualt art doesn’t help at all. I definitely agree. But as Davout is cavarly, giving him a snair drum is not that big of a sacrifice. After Davout helped me in obtaining all of the princesses, I use him mainly as an artillery general.

Davout vs Sophia, Geography v. No Geography, Same movement otherwise. Sophia at the very best loses only 1 hex of movement traveling the north eastern path, and 2 hexes traveling the southern path. Up to 50% of her max movement potential is lost. While it is possible to survive without geography, it can make it very painful in many scenarios. Hence imo strike traded for geography is not all that bad of a tradeoff, as it is a blue tier skill for another blue tier skill.

This time I'm not convinced until now... First I have to understand if you allow item changing or not - I count with changing. My concerns are cost and damage. Geography is extreme useful but a very expensive skill - you need one +2 and exclusively a second move item to use this skill (and two Dietz anyway) a beginner will take long before the first time get use of this skill. Even maxed out he cant't arrive at +10 move (this is exclusively for Isabella) + he needs regrouping Damage - an offensive general without burgle/strike/akkurate or at least siege master needs a extreme good set of other skills to be useful - Davot has one (not bad) skill during attacks - this is too less to compensate this deficit - Assault Art doesn't add one single point to his output - but in 10% of the cases you will get the highest random. All your tactical advises are important and correct and work for any unit or general Keep in mind that +20% - 20% = -4% (and not 0!)

Afterwards, he is still a pretty great general on your team. If you want a siege focused iap, the only real option is either kutuzov, who is only passable on infantry and navy (unless you want a general who has only siege and defense art on cavarly, which is pretty meh). Otherwise, Sophia and Ney do have siege, and they also have spy (Sophia also has explosives for hammering cities). But Davout can get from city to city much faster, and he still has assualt art which when it triggers, can do great damage on city garrison than someone with even siege can do.

As for who is worse, Lassalle, Moreau, or Suvorov. I think the ranking goes Suvorov >>>> Moreau > Lasalle
Lassslle is just Golitsyn with two extra movement stars. Give golitsyn a horse shoe and he will have the same movement as lassalle starting out. Buying Lassalle is a very bad purchase, especially considering Dabrowski exists. 1 training stars is very very bad, and absolutely destroys what usefulness Lassalle may have offered to your team.
Moreau is also absolutely terrible. Scharnhorst with an oak wheel is a slightly weaker Moreau with an extra training star. Moreau starting out has pretty weak stars. His 4 stars in infantry we will never use as he has no infantry skills. His movement at 2 stars is passable as he has engineering, but for an iap, its pretty bad considering nelson has equivalent starting movement. Furthermore, 2 training stars, while an improvement on Golitsyn, is still awful.
Suvorov is definitely the best. For one, he has mass fire on both, meaning his damage will always be reasonably high (not very high even though his skills look pretty, you will rarely break 60 damage on guards). Furthermore, he also has 5 training stars. Training stars cannot be improved whatsover, so starting with 5 training stars is amazing. And his middle tier replacement, Dobeln also has no training stars at all.
So to summarize, the replacements for Suvorov is actually significantly worse than Suvorov himself. Dobeln has 0 training stars while Suvorov has 5. He also has formation on dobeln. On the otherhand, despite Moreau also having explosives on Scharnhorst, the only other advantage that Moreau has over Scharhorst is the extra 1 star in movement, which is fixable with an item that costs less than 200 medals with a 5 star trainer. Otherwise, Moreau’s stars are equivalent to Scharnhorsy, with the exception of having one less training stars. Lassalle is essentially identical to Golitsyn, but with two extra movement stars. So he is the biggest waste.
Suvorov is still pretty far from a good iap due to lacking leadership. But he has some appreciable qualities.

And if you want to be a hack, get Radetsky. War master for ranking super fast. Strike and Surprise for consistent output. Defense art for the defense. 4 training stars just in case. 4 trading stars because regrouping jerome is overrated.

He won't deal much damage to a garrison! That's my point: When Assault Art triggers he will deal the maximum damage he randomly can get from this fight. On a capital with -20% this is not many for him. Everyone with only SM can hit harder. If he is flanked from a envased point (trenched, city, forest etc.) point he can't defend himself. His speed can be nice - with two saddle or two horse artillery he's direct on +7 move perfect ! - so Dietz is probably more expensive than buying him all the Items - but on a cost in any case. More than +7 are only needed if you want to see him moving 6hex on light or heavy cavalry and 5hex on light artillery - if it's worth another 1000 - but this must be the plan why else you want him?

Yep I agree. - 20% is the extreme case with a lvl 7 city. Those are very rare. And - 20% damage is not a horrendous debuff when it happens. Usually it will be between 6%-12% damage reduction (lvl 2 to lvl 4 city) that he will be attacking.

OK - (it was just the garrison I took for argument) 6%-12% are usual and he has explosives/strike does it compare this? But cities are the smaller problem: Outside trees cause C-10% A-5% or C-20% A-10% hills reverse C-5% A-10% or C-10% A-20% trench adds 25 percent points a bunker 30 pp - less then half the map is without envasion - even 20% or more are not rare! For geography - yes for a starter geography will be really handy as long as you don't have a war horse (and first you need a snare!) - extremly valuable - I've just seen the mid-long term costs - not the immediate benefits at start - this point is already yours.

Geography is very important to me I use it in almost every strategy game I play, for example Wc3,Wc4 European war 4 and more. I also like Jolly Pixel games like Pixel Soldiers the great war.
My perfect infantry general would have Economic Master, Assault art, Massfire, And Leadership.
