Good points. It makes me think that it's never the right move to buy any non trainer general, except Charles and Marmont when you start. Those 2 kickass.

My main problem with Scharnhorst (and all non-princess Artillery generals) is that Sophia is free and easy to win, while Isabella is free. A third artillery general is probably OP, and Kutaisov is both a trainer and good enough to roll around as your No.2 artillery general while you gun for Isabella. You will not have 3 arty's, you will regroup Scharnhorst into either of the princesses Sophia or Isabella. You lose 360 medals in the long run which is chump change. Well firstly, Scharnhorst is also an artillery trainer. So you really lose around 360 medals with purchasing him (790 - 430 = 360). Secondly, with an oak wheel he moves 3 hexes making him extremely fast. The last important criteria to consider is the fact that he has 3 training stars and has consistently good output due to accurate. Even though siege + explosives > accurate, accurate as a standalone skill is still really good. In order to get Kutaisov to 3 hex movement, you need to give him a horse artillery and an oak wheel, which most players don't have lying around. The damage Kutaisov also deals will be slightly higher than Scharnhorst. And if I am not mistaken, a second oak wheel is no easy to find as it is neither in the coalition nor the imperial eagle campaign, and Sophia is also badly in need of one. So imo, Sophia + Oak Wheel, Scharnorst + Horse Artillery, & Fatimah/Sulkowski/Dumouriez/Raevsky is the perfect team to get Isabella. You really won't lose that many medals to make a difference in the long run. So it is safe to assume that Scharnhorst can move 150% as fast as Kutaisov, that combined with his 3 training stars makes him a pretty good deal. Fair enough, you make a good case. It comes down to whether or not you’d rather save 360ish medals with Kutaisov (which can be made up relatively easily once your grind is in place) or go with Scharnhorst.

I might add Berthier as a long-term project or Golitsyn as a finisher if you play with 6 or more slots, but yeah. A princess-based team is probably the best way to roll, unless you use IAP generals.

Everyone else is either an equal or slightly worse like Radetsky to Lan.

However, there are a few generals like Lannes, Nelson, and Davout that are either better than or don’t have an obvious princess counterpart. Golitsyn and Berthier are imo the only T2 generals who fit that description.

Berthier
If you are a 4 slot player, either get berthier and fully regroup him pre lan (lan with no regrouping is still pretty solid). Or don't get him at all.
Golitsyn is a good alternative.
If you have Davout/Poniatowski/Lannes, do not get Berthier
Price: 4 Emblems or 945 Medals
Type of General: Cavarly
Starting Movement: 3 hex on any cavarly
While Berthier starts with 1 star movement and 1 star cavarly, after you regroup him, he will be a monster and imo the best general in the game (slightly better than lan as geography will alloy him to have an offensive item rather than a war horse). After you regroup him to 4/5 stars in cavarly, even though he will only have 1 star movement, he will have 3 consistent hex movement, which is more than most generals can offer, while also having pretty significant damage. He is not a complete waste either as 4 stars in trading and 3 training stars is pretty great. Overall, if you bother to max out berthier, he will be an extremely overpowered general and countries will collapse due to his attack. Just fantastic.
I read again Berthier He was a great staff commander, Napoleon's 'right hand' but he was The worst general in field ever , during this area. The EW4-Berthier skills and ⭐ are choosen to be like his historical original. Fence is no cavalry skill (only inf.) Geography is an Anti-skill for cavalry. Heavy cavalry (the only case to use) equals light Artillery (move/cost) guards cavalry have additional 'spy deluxe' (forts+50% and also ships+40%!) - armored cars deal more than ≈+50% against cavalry and infantry. Heavy cavalry is good for spamming but nothing for a good general - and so geography - useful: 0. Two skills for 945🎖 - starting slow and weak - and after 2k🎖 more of investment, his max. damage can be maybe up to 9 higher than Sakurako. Wow! (8.4 on dbl. AC against cav) Even his 4⭐ trade are fake - with high nobility you need either 2⭐ or 5⭐. Berthier is a horrible general. probably the worst buy you can make - he will mess up your progress for long - without being useful. He is famous for being a fail.

𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘴𝘬𝘺,he was Napoleon's economic master so I see why you say he is bad. He should have some economic skills but then again most Generals aren't accurate. He did die from falling out a window so I see why you call him bad.

He was a big help for Napoleon during planning and perfect for administrating his plans. Very high ranked, but the few times he had the command on his own he failed completely. He is famous - for being a horrible general.

Berthier is a horrible general. probably the worst buy you can make - he will mess up your progress for long - without being useful. He is famous for being a fail. Yes, but potential wise, he is better than lan. I cannot tell you how annoying it is when 2 out of lan’s 4 hex movement is absorbed by the terrain. If you are smart, you can avoid terrain mobility loses but if you aren’t, it will sting pretty badly. Imo on berthier, I would give him a snair drum and a flintlock, whereas for sakurako (ignoring lan for now), I would give her a warhorse and a snair drum. Again, this means that Berthier will have surprise and then a flintlock on sakurako, which is like a 15 damage boost essentially. Berthier is a general who is absolutely fantastic at sieging cities where that little bit of extra damage will make a difference between killing or not killing city garrison. The trade star situation, regroup jerome, 330 medals, into him and he will be 5 star. There is a large difference between a 5 star trade general and a 4 star trade general (achievable with high nobility as well). That combined with how little jerome costs makes this a pretty much invalid point. I do agree with how he starts out sucking. If you have more than 4 general slots, and are also willing to grind, you could make that sum in a week’s time. The grand total comes out to be 3,450 medals (3 extra mov, 4 extra cav, 1 extra trading). Which is honestly not all that terrible of a grind. I believe I done worse as I have gotten lannes to 5 stars in everything. When compared to Lan, Berthier’s will still have that consistent edge as he will have a flintlock advantage to her (you will need to give lan a geography item). Lan’s leadership will be meh the majority of the time as lan will be at max morale due to being a cavarly general. 2 extra training stars is also not a collosal difference, especially when its between 3 and 5. Assualt art is a great addition to. But you’ll find that berthier’s output will be much more conistent than lan’s. No one can deny that he is really good when maxed out, as there are very few generals in comparison with the same amount of potential. His enormous trading price however thus make him a turn off for most casual players due to how long it will take.

You even don't need to buy another individual war horse, so his initial cost will be 815🎖 less. But If you just have one war horse - you have to change items anyway. Yes - he just needs one cheap businesses trainer to be really good for trade this is a big plus. For somebody who is swapping items his horrible price performance is the problem. 2500🎖 for trainers and he will be equal to Golitsyn. Until he is finished the campaign is practical over - OK you will probably need more time. If you can farm with an autoclicker thousands of medals, he can become one time a usable general - just his basic build costs more, than all the awards you can get from the campaign. I haven't seen a good cavalry general in tier 2 Except for geography (useful if you don't swap items) he shares the same skills (even the useless fence) with Golitsyn - who has 3 move and 5 cavalry. Berthier is the worst buy you can make during the campaign - he will block your progress for a long time - after for collecting maybe. Maxing out Sakurako to 5⭐ in Inf + Art + Cav + Move + Trade is cheaper! Yes, In the end Berthier can deal 6 net more dammage, and in most parts of Europe where others only can move 5hex he can move heavy cavalry 6hex. It's a long long way. I'm sure ET skilled Berthier like this, for his historical character. Brilliant but a disaster as combat general.

I just don’t like it as it painfully slows down the game. And yes, 3450 medals is 69 missions 5 starred, which is more than 3 campaigns. But once again, if you are delligient and sit down, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and grind out the battle of trafalgar for severals hours per day, you will get berthier maxed out in no time. So i don’t really think that forcing the player to grind hard for him is a bad thing, as many of us are more than capable of pulling this off. Indeed, berthier is a horrendous buy with a 4 general slot maximum cap or among the first generals. Imo you should buy him after getting sakurako. Even Golitsyn is a mediocre buy early on considering that Sulkowski or Raevsky (Get one to the two and scharnhorst then grind) are very cheap and great price performers that will fulfill your cavarly needs in the time being. And don’t forget that Sophia needs a war horse too. If you get Berthier after Sakurako, he will be 1). Fast and strong enough to make short work of the western front during Britain 1812, 2) Fast enough to make knocking out the ottoman empire during 1798 a breeze, 3) A 5 star trading general making campaigns and conquests a breeze, 4) Better survivability and damage over golitsyn. Its honestly personal preference. 1) Berthier is never horrible, just a really bad grind like the ecs that might make you actually restart the game if you find out you are not up to the task. 2) I am sure if you ask any of those who actually did get berthier maxed, they would say that he is the best general in the game and their go to over lan.

And, (only) if you don't change items: he can have higher output than other cavalry generals! Cavalry needs two slots snair/flintrock - this is the reason I think sailor is a good skill for cav. I personally change items. So for my style of playing, he can't really offer anything extra - for an exorbitant cost. For this reason I leave to compare him to real cav. GeneralgirlsBut now I can understand why he can be [...] Thank you again for your detailed analysis Friedrich “Fried Rice” Paulus. P.S. My Sophia will become more Agha, but I'm still searching another cavalry general (Golitsyn?)
