Zakrevsky Price: 455 Medals
Type of General: Infantry
Starting Movement: 3 hexes on light infantry, 2 hexes on everything else
An infantry trainer with mass fire. Wow! If you use him on light infantry, he'll also move 3 hexes. A great option if you want an infantry general early on. The fact that he is a trainer too only helps his case as the cheapest infantry trainer is only 45 medals less.

Arnold
Price: 535 Medals Type of General: Infantry Starting Movement: 2 hexes Arnold is a general that will save you medals if you buy him, especially if you are playing without iaps. His 5 star trade ability will jump start your economy, especially in conquest. In combat, he is also not all that bad as his spy ability can definitely deal some good damage against forts. And he is also a business trainer, so that means only about 200 medals are lost. For 200 medals, Arnold is actually pretty dang good. Also having a 5 star trade general early on means you can purchase/rent good items like the war horse early on, and sell the golden stars as well. So imo, Arnold deserves purple as he might even be the best starting general to begin ew4 with.

CharlesPrice: 450 Medals
Type of General: Cavarly
Starting Movement: 3 hexes on everything
Hardest hitting cavarly general in the first tier. Also, is amazing at sieging cities making him a beast. Especially in conquest. Actually not all that bargain as 450 medals is around the price of Quesandovah, who is much worse (yet still a trainer).

DiezPrice: 540 Medals
Type of General: Cavarly
Starting Movement: 4 hexes on light cavarly and heavy cavarly, 3 on everything else.
The cheapest move trainer, as well as the only one in the first tier. That alone makes him a must buy. Furthermore, he actually isn't all that bad. He does not have any skills, but his starting stars are quite good, and if you get him as a starting general, you will be saving yourself a lot of stress in the future. Also, he is very fast and the only, well other than Andrade who is a strong candidate for worst general in the game, 4 hex moving cavarly general in tier 1. Pretty good!

Hall of the Slightly Above Average
Marmont: with an oak wheel, has 3 hex movement. But his price is a huge drawback as he is almost 600 medals. Also, accurate > explosives, so imo I would strongily recommend saving for Scharnhorst as he is a huge upgrade for only 200 medals more.
Junot: awful movement makes him worthless on horse grenadier guards or armored cars. With a horseshoe, he isn't too bad. But Charles is a cheaper and better version of Junot, Dumouriez is a trainer, and Sulkowski is Junot with Cavarly Trainer and Spy. Get one of those 3 instead, they are way better.
August I: fantastic price performer as he is only 15 medals more than the cheapest buisiness trainer, jerome, and has archicture. But a general with architecture won't jump start your economy the way arnold will with his 5 buisiness stars, so save for him instead.
Lusignan: if you don't need an infantry trainer or are too impatient to get Zakrevsky, Lusignan is always a good alternative.
Gazan: worse and more expensive Kutaisov, but still not horrible.
Brueys: I would save for ushakov or wait for Kait, but Brueys can still be a reasonably decent naval general.
Chichakov: Brueys clone with negligible differences.
Sokolnicki: Scharnhorst with only 2 artillery stars, 1 training star, and without artillery trainer with an extremely high price tag of around 600$. He is better than Grouchy but still far from good.
Carteux: a napoleon lite in appearance, but essentially just kutaisov without explosives or artillery trainer. Meh

Hull Price: 595 Medals Type of General: Infantry Starting Movement: 3 hexes on light infantry, 2 hexes on everything else At last, the time has come! Pray for Hull, because I am about to rip into him. Hull is easily the most overrated general in the entire game, and its not hard to see why. He has 4 infantry stars, two infantry skills, and good movement so how bad can be. I imagine that that alone is a beacon attracting the attention of most noobs playing that game who think that purchasing Hull will solve their problems. Well it won't, and here's why. 1. Hull is expensive. Hull is 600 medals practically, and probably the most expensive first tier general. And that is probably only making him more appealing in the eyes of noobs. But he is no where near the price, especially considering the fact that Zakrevsky is 25% less expensive, but is a trainer with mass fire, making him have at least twice the quality if not more than hull. Furthermore, there are better and cheaper options even in the first tier. And if you consider the fact that he is only 270 medals less than Dobeln, one of the best infantry generals in the game, you can easily see how ridiculously expensive hull is. 2. Hull is average at best: in fact, if you wait a bit, you will get Sakurako and Maria as free to use princesses after grinding out conquests. You need 450 years rule in europe to get Maria (which is not all that hard, I have gotten 600 with no generals and others have even gotten to 700), and 350 years rule in Asia for Sakurako. Compared to both, Hull has an extra infantry star on Maria, but is crippled by the tradeoff, losing a star of movement (meaning he moves a hex slower on grenadiers, guards, and line infantry) and 3 training stars. We are not even going to compare him to sakurako, the quality difference is massive. Otherwise, an infantry general with formation will have decent output at first, but will become a peashooter after a couple of hits, and hull's painful zero training stars are not helping his case. 3. Hull is an infantry general. Infantry is much less useful than cavarly (especially cavarly with a snair drum) or artillery early on. And a infantry general with mass fire as a starting general. Eww 4. Rowland and Blasius are better. Rowland has leadership making him not afraid of cavarly, flanking, or food shortages. He has essentially hull's output with an additional skill making him much better. Blasius is hull with spy making him a great fortress cracker. Yeah, even among the tier 1 generals, there are many better choices.
Hull is overrated, don't get him! I beg of you. He'll die before he contributes anything to your game whatsover. And he is also very expensive. He sucks honestly, and is not good.
