I probably would've swapped in jungle fighting for mobility sake, but he looks like a beast!

Yep! The Japanese gens aren't the best aren't they? I tend to like max mobility on all my gens, so that's just my preference. I had to swap out another skill on joffre (riding master) for jungle so that I could 3-star some of the french history missions as there are some where you have to rush to the front lines before the germans swarm them.

History missions are always tough, so its understandable that you're struggling. The really 'easy' ones are the japanese and soviet missions, as you only need to use tonnes of medipacks to fulfil it. With soviet gens tho, you should be able to 3-star the mission. Upgrade your mobility and population to the max, as everything in history is 2 levels higher than your level at the moment. So don't try to do many history missions before you max out all mobility and population tech, as you are just wasting your time. Secondly, buy historical gens. Macmahon and beatty would be a good choice, as they're usable in history and can actually be used up till the endgame. 
 The prussian history missions are easy as you literally only need Moltke to complete them+ beseler/hindenburg (whichever one you have). Beseler is an essential artillery gen so get him to support ivanov, he's arguably the best in the game actually. 
As for the civil war missions. You need to check the guides for those, unless you would want to buy McClennan, who costs medals, so only buy him as a last resort. The two civil war missions are quite hard to do, so it may take time. 

The Italian isonzo campaign mission is straightforward and easy-to-do, but you need to buy some gens with medals, so only attempt this if you have medals to spare. 

 Now, the cuban war of independence. It is probably the most easiest mission to do. You only need to buy Macarthur, upgrade him so that he could hold 2 items, smack 2 ambulances on him, and do the mission. This mission is the best for farming textbooks (to change skills). 

The french and british missions I personally find difficult to complete. I havent 3-starred the British one, but you would need a max Beatty, with other british navy gens heavily invested. The French missions require you to have both Joffre and Macmahon. Joffre is usable in conquest, but he needs 3 skills to be changed, so he's quite costly. But for the french missions, you must invest heavily in ALL buyable french generals in the game to stand a good chance. Yep- even esperey and the other navy gen. The french missions are quite frustrating for me, but I eventually got them done. Refer to mission guides if you're confused, but that's some general advice. 

Oh yes, The russian mission- just look at the guide posted on this site. Quite easy if you have the proper gens.
