Right,it just means a lot of people responded and posted in that thread so the topic is red hot to the point of starting a fire.
I though about about making different icons to show different levels of "heat" (or interest) but maybe that might be too confusing so left it as is for now .

As a general rule no it doesn't ,although it could be the case in some instances.
Priority means more important,it means it takes precedence over others.Hot just means popular,something that was of interest.So just because a thread is popular it does not make it more important than other threads,it just means that more people responded to it that's all,maybe because they felt more comfortable responding to it or liked the OP ect..
In fact we have many threads that are more important or "priority" threads and yet are not hot or popular.
