so just started playing the game im kinda confused on how do you open case yellow/white and what general should I buy. rundstedt seemed good cause infantry seems really strong but idk, can someone help me out? I would recommend to hire 2 tank generals. One on each side. Don't bother to buy so to say "starter" generals (besides free generals are quite good in this game) Buy only the best, since we don't have a possibility to dismiss them. If I started the game anew and didn't have any bias or special preferences I usually have - my ultimate choice would be: Govorov-Rokossovsky-Konev-Nimitz-MacArthur or Slim-Patton or Vatutin. Guderian-Kesselring-Rommel-Doentz-Leeb-Badoglio. Free generals like Leclerc, Chuikov, Bock, Ozawa, Model etc. can serve as decent replacements all along the way. Timoshenko might be even a hidden jem... I see. But here I am stuck at Crete/Arras and it seemed like I cannot progress without buying two generals for the missions, which will obviously drain my entire saving. So do I have to start the grind (hopefully not) with army groups and conquests? If so what's the fastest way to get medals?

Well, Army Group mode is rather easy when you get used to it, and rewards are good enough. But I guess many things are challenging when you just start the game. Yet, this initial stage has many rewards as well. Probably achievements are the best source of medals at the beginning. You can occasionally get medals while replaying early campaigns like in EW 4 ( european-war-4.boards.net/thread/13729/best-medal-farming-mission ), but I wouldn't call it "the fastest way" since the drop rate of medals is far from satisfying to my taste...

Oh well, I grinded a bit and now faced with the difficult choice of getting my first general. I'm deciding between Guderian and Rommel. I'm quite conflicted because this general will have to carry me until North Africa/Pacific. I'm leaning toward Rommel because I think Panzer Leader is the best skill a tank general can have but blitzkrieg too seemed very good. Any recommendations?

I bought Rommel and he's perfectly OK in early campaigns, but his real domain are heavy tanks, and it is true we don't have many of those early in the game. From the point of grinding it is Guderian again, because he can earn additional medals in 1939 and 1941. But in general they are pretty close, so I wouldn't call either decision a "miscalculation".

I wouldn't recommend Dowding until later though since an air general isn't a good first purchase. If you think Tassigny is better than Slim and want a cheap Allied infantry general before unlocking Pacific, then go for him. Otherwise, buy Montgomery, a very good Allied tank general.

First allied Generals I bought, was Patton/Monty for 41 desert. You can do the first 3 themes with free gens on allied side.
Axis I bought Leeb 39, Guderian and Yamashita 42. I also got Rommel for Africa.

Tito is a god on Cossack Cavalry, but like HangryBird said, he isn't endgame material

Is Kleist a good buy for a cheap tank general? Starting in 44 I can see how two tank generals and I'm consistently getting two heavies. I used Bock on the second one but he's just not pushing it. Guderian too expensive and by the time I can afford him I've already have finished pacific 45. Or should I save for Henrici instead.

Kleist, Heinrici, and other cheap tank gens will not cut it. Only consider them once you have both Guderian and Rommel.
