My first post on the board and I can share pictures of the result later (I didn't do turn by turn screen shots)
Was checking the board for a good Tribal Union conquest guide and noticed that Belgium 1914 has been a struggle for lot of people. May be I was super lucky (or may be I am just that good ) but I was able to complete it in 2 attempts with just 11 25% medpacks in 60 turns. For full disclosure, I have fully loaded tech (except for Cavalry Attack 7) and missing may be 1-2 medals. I did not buy any medals, cards or paid to upgrade princesses. So this is totally doable without buying upgrades.
I considered 3 strategies:
1) Fight it out in Brussels and hope for French and the Brits to support me on time. Take Cologne / Frankfurt and keep "rushing" - this idea was "Dead on Arrival" as it's clearly destined to fail given the strength of AI units and strong German economy
2) Bribe Germans once try to take Amsterdam to create some flexibility (this was my initial strategy in Attempt #1) - It took me 4 turns to take Amsterdam but a) Netherlands is not an easy nut to crack and you do lose time / strength and 2) German army is still too close to quickly wipe you out. While taking Amsterdam makes it easier for Brits to land, at the end of the day, they arrive to late and usually get heavily damaged before landing
Third strategy, which was the right strategy pursue was as follows:
- Bribe Germans
- Put your best Artillery General on Howtizer (Beseler for me) and move him with Albert towards Hamburg
- Build Light Artillery and put another general (Prince Leopold for me) and have him follow the crew towards Hamburg
- Turn 3: Bribe Germans one more time - this is key. It allows Russians to start fighting Austria and keeps your Balkan allies alive. Italy goes after Austria and can take few German cities when Germany enters the war. It also allows the Brits and French start moving towards Austria, but when Germany enters war, they immediately help you around Bruxelles
- Turn 5: Right when Germany declares war, you should have enough $ to create a militia. Put your best inf general (Bismarck or any other defensive inf gen) and equip them with Prussian Helmets. Move your Art generals towards Berlin but within striking distance of Hamburg. Use arty to knock down Hamburg walls and put Albert I in Hamburg
By Turn 5, French will be starting to pressure Western German, Brits are about to land in Netherlands which will help you keep Bruxelles. Use medpacks to withstand several attacks on Bruxelles and then it should ease up. The Russians will start putting heavy pressure on east germany and east Austria, which should allow you to take Berlin and Leipzig quickly. From that point, everything is pretty random but follow these guidelines
1) take advantage of the Russian German carnage to take over some cities.
2) Germans invest heavy in forts - ignore them. you can leave northern german cities unguarded
3) I put a cavalry princess in Berlin and produced bunch of armored cars with my best Cav generals
4) Dont focus on Prague, Nuremberg or Vienna - try taking Krakow and using the mountain passage get to Cluj Napoca
5) By then Balkan cities will be ripe for taking
6) Strike Austria from the bottom and work your way up (Austria goes first)
7) Bulgaria may give you lot of trouble if they captured few cities in Balkans - instead of engaging their generals, try to take the unprotected cities (in one move I was able to take 3 and wipe out Bulgarians)
8) send a couple of troops in Italy to take advantage of cities destroyed by Tribals and Turks
9) French / Brits will weaken the Western germans so you can clean up there
10) Once Austria and Bulgaria go, you are essentially winning it. Germans will be in Africa only, but tribals will spam heavy to west italy
11) Once you take Constantinople - only engage Turks from the South Russia side (but you can have limited action there)
12) Take some of your Balkan troops and see if you can land them in Africa or French/Italian islands. That will heavily reduce spam
13) Sign peace with Germans
14) Sign peace with Tribals
15) Go all in on Turkey - they will have a very strong economy and will make your life miserable, but after you take a couple of cities, build up cash make sign peace
General note: the strategy heavily relies on you switching in and out of the equipment during the gameplay. Often time it requires you switching gear within a turn (for example, before attacking with Beseler, I would equip him with Artillery Quadrant and after he does the damage, switch out to 2 prussian helmets or 30 pt health healer). Also, you have to be smart when taking cities, don't approach it too close for AI to build a unit, use lot of Forced Marches, Blasts and Marches. Get some gas masks and use lot of gas at the end
