Here is how I got 3*: Of the secondaries, only two are at issue:
(1) Occupy Chania in 4 turns (2) Defeat Mountbatten in 8 turns (labeled 'B') You start with two para infantry and a third that can be made para, one artillery, one tank.
You have four infantry reinforcements that can be deployed at Chania and the nearby airport, along with one recon. Each objective city can replenish and reinforce your infantry. You tank and artillery can only be replenished at the SE objective city.
So how I proceeded. Put your best infantry general (or two infantry generals if you have them) on your paratroops and airdrop to points labeled A. You want to take out the naval gun so that your ships can help bombard Chania. Tank, artillery, and spare infantry follow via the sea. As soon as you secure Chania or the airport, call in your reinforcements.
Force A is my original force; two paratroopers, tank, artillery. Force C are my reinforcements + spare infantry.
Force A moves south, the tank and artillery shoot the gap between A & C. Infantry can move over the mountains, or paradrop onto the naval gun (should be unoccupied). You want infantry on that gun to land shots on Mountbatten, it will take two turns to defeat him. The tank can also move directly onto the factory. The SE city is only defended by one artillery. The SW city is one artillery, one infantry, one recon. Once Mountbatten is defeated, three units will spawn in sea zones. You could attack the special forces one before it makes landfall.
Force C moves east. At some point a retreat order will be given for the AI and they will start pulling back, so taking the center north city wont be too hard. Have your navy bombard the city, infantry man the gun circled by the "C" arrow. If you need to stop and replenish, you have the time. At some point, money isn't a big problem - your income should be around 20-30 a turn, so reupping troops and putting spec forces or para on infantry is a good idea.
Once the center north and southern cities are secure, then start moving east. You can use the airport in the center north to paradrop so your army can come to bear faster. Otherwise, just press forward with the tank and artillery. I took the fifth city with all three objectives in 11/20 turns. So there is a lot of room to play with keeping your forces up.

By the way, do you know how to beat the allied version.

The allied one was significantly more difficult my first time through. I think I had 2* because I let them capture Chania at some point. . .
Anyway, you have an income of +20/turn. So each turn you can reinforce one infantry in each objective city. Having an AA gun in key spots helps too. The reinforcements I used were the heavy artillery and heavy tank that become available on turn 4. I deployed them south so that they were not attacked their first turn on the board.
It is a matter of continually throwing infantry into the meat grinder of the objective cities and letting your artillery and tanks clean up what lands. Your navy will be destroyed. I used mine to bombard troops that had landed. How the map goes for me is you have the starting enemies, then Student lands on turn 4ish with a decent sized force on the west of the map, finally around turn 8ish the german troops from the east start creeping over. There are a couple one-off troops that land from the north after turn 6, but nothing worrisome. Just sit infantry w/AA in the objective cities (generals on these units helps) and continually reup those units.
I did go back through to get 3* after the '41 east campaign. Kat-rockets with a decent general on your starting heavy artillery make the map a lot easier.

So after experiencing the hell that was the Battle of Crete I thought this would be much easier. Oh how wrong was I. I can capture the first three cities but by then my forces are all but depleted and the rest is quite difficult. Should I grind a bit and get Rundstedt then come back or is there a way to do this with only Messe and Bock?

Rundstedt will make things easier or getting better tech should enable a win with just Messe and Bock.

Focus on paratrooping even on Crete.

Also should I put Bock on artillery and Messe on tank or Messe on infantry and Bock on tank.
