I think using airstrike is much easier than tank.
Just have your air gen on a paratrooper sitting in the airport and sniping around the near-dead enemies. Also spend a lot of supplies on the free airstrikes.
More importantly, to make airstrike feasible, have one or two of your troops running around stealing allied AI cities.
