First level is to unlock the units, so you can build them.
After Unlock, every extra level adds one cheveron (+2 defense) to every unit you buld new, during this campaign. (The starting troops remain equal)
Don't boost the units you want to build for your generals.
All upgrades work only for the campaign where you make them. (not conquest, not other campaigns)

And in the first two campaigns there is practical no need to unlock - maybe for the last missions. Usually you get top starting units and too few resources.

The first two campaigns, except the invasion of Britain and the one before that in imperial eagle were easy. You get a lot of good troops. Even in HRE and eastern overlord. But the American campaign (I just reached) gives far less inferior troops compared to the enemies and compared to other campaigns. You have to put your generals on inferior units though.

Yes and on top the different country-systems. The American campaign feels so different.

Every fight is in the same area against the British, and your troops suck. I donβt find myself replaying it often

I remember quite good how "different" the American campaign suddenly felt - once I got used to it, this campaign was quite fast finished. I think the American campaign has the only one conquer-mission, where you need to eliminate all enemy troops.

I just reached the American campaign 2-3 days back and I am already on the last mission though. BTW, that conquest mission is my favourite in the American Campaign.
