He was a Douglas Haig (I can use this analogy for all sorts of people!). He was a man who would let a thousand men die to capture one objective. At least Haig captured his objectives. Voroshilov would sacrifice a thousand men just to get forced back to a new position, then repeated this constantly until Stalin had enough and got rid of him. Then Timoshenko came in and cleaned up the mess. That's because the effects of the great Purge were lessened by the time Timoshenko came in.

Overrated George S. Patton jr. Underrated Hermann Balck Patton wasn't overrated! He was pretty much an American Rommel! Also, I think Black was pretty incompetent, to be honest. He didn't really do anything major... Balck Destroyed the Soviet 5th Tank Army on the eastern Front. Patton overall was average at best in my opinion. What have he done that was so noteworthy?

Effects of great purge lessened in a week ? , Timoshenko was also a "Haig". Haig was awful at start but during British and Commonwealth offensive in 1918, he realised the reality of western front and that is why Brits and Commonwealth( Respect to Canadians and ANZACs) managed to destroy the German will to fight

Patton is not overrated as a field commander. The 3rd Army operations during the Normandy breakout and advance to the Rhine should have breached the German frontier in ‘44 if supplies had not been prioritized to Market Garden. During the Ardennes Offensive, the 3rd Army disengaged, reorganized, moved 100 miles in i climate weather, and launched an effective offensive in 72 hours. The relief of Bastogne was one of the most impressive maneuvers of the war.
as an underrated general, kesselring. The evacuation of Sicily and defensive operations in Italy were, for me, the most impressive feat by any nation when you consider differences in supplies, manpower, and air support. That said, kesselring was a war criminal and is deserving of eternal contempt for his actions against Italian civilians.

An overrated general may be Hoth. He was highly incapable and when given all the supplies he needed, he couldn't even support Manstein in Operation Winterstorm. Failing to create a bridge to Paulus and failing to stand up to the Fuhrer when it was clear that Goering had lied about supplying the 6th.
An underrated has to be Messe. He is not given enough credit for being the only efficient and able Italian commander. He was the commander of the Italian expedition to Russia before being removed and fought many battles in North Africa. His ability to be able to extract victories from the garbage equipement and tanks that Italy had is surprising.

Are these the same Italian civilians who praised Graziani for "pacifying" Fezzan and Addis Ababa? In addition, partisan uprisings everywhere were brutally suppressed.

But since USA, England and Russia were allied then why take the territory whose occupier has been defeated mostly by your ally. If they were bad then why did you ally with them ?

Don't forget Segregation, opposition to Japanese proposal of Racial Equality in League of Nations and ban on entry of Asians , this was in the same era, actually one surpassed them . Also what about mindless killings in Vietnam.
