Right now I have a very mixed team and judging from all the post in this board regarding commander skills I feel like I need to start building a team around a specific unit type. My main generals are Attila, Alexander, Barbarossa, Nobunaga, Catherine, Lincoln, Saladin, Moctezuma and all the others I feel are not worth mentioning.

I would go with either mixed, or an ArtyCom lineup with infantry for melee with Nobunaga to deal with cav and Gerd von Rundstedt for Armor Master

I voted ArchCom: Nelson, Li & Nobunaga are a very strong triumvirate and another archer would benefit from the 2 commanders. Attila & Saladin make a good combo too for the frontline, at least one arty, leaves one more space to fill. In my first team I had 5 archers, 2 arty & Saladin so it is possible to do without infantry. I'm trying a mixed/balanced team this time with 2 of each but it's main drawback is the lack of 2 commanders of the same unit type so I don't know if it will be strong enough in the endgame...

Li Shimin is ridiculously OP in this game, better than Nobunaga Oda.

Iron Duke, the last time I tried 2 of each (excluding my current ArchCom leaning, but balanced lineup), it was criticised as being "too balanced". However, it was because I fielded Alexander instead of my current Petain as the 2nd inf gen and Catherine / Mocty instead of Li Hongzhang followed by Catherine / Mocty. Mixed is still my preferred choice because it allows for effective independent action if your troops need to split up. However, you can lean on one of the three Commander builds to enhance your strongest build.

No best, but suits you best. Do you want to start a new run or just improve your current lineup? I recommend ArchCom for a new run, CavCom for current process, since you have some generals suitable for CavCom. ArchCom is the easiest one. 3 commanders, Nobunaga, Washington, Petain, Napolean, and Yi Sun Sin, these eight can deal with any case. Without IAPs, Moctezuma is recommended to take the place of Washington and Bismarck for Napolean. CavCom requires more techniques or efforts, especially in Greek Myths. 2 or 3 commanders(Attila, Edward then Ashoka), Nonbunaga, Moctezuma, Blucher, Suleiman, Cleopatra, Bismarck, Catherine are needed. Of course it depends, like if you have the bottle and Washington, than Mocte is unnecessary and Catherine is upgraded to Washington. The endgame lineups are always updating to keep with the newest version. e.g. Suleiman in the CavCom is not recommended since Blucher can do everything better than Suleiman in earlier version, but the Greek Myths requires a tanky general from beginning to the end in battles, so the case changed.

Thanks for the input everyone but after careful consideration I think the style that suits me best and the team that'll give me the best time playing this game will be a mixed team with a heavier focus on cavalry and archers.

I think I’ll aim for a archcom with Nobunaga, Li HongZhang, Moctezuma, and Catherine. I also have Petain, Barbarossa, Alexander, Li Shimin, Genghis, and Saladin for mains. I’m thinking to maybe add Mulan to my team, would that be good?

Is one commander enough though?
