Jammu and Kashmir was a princely state accepting British paramountacy. It was the 2nd largest princely state. When transfer of power in 1946 began , British divided their directly provinces between India and Pakistan and gave the princely states right to chose whether they wanted to join Pakistan, India or remain Independent. Most princely states were small and except Baloch states, Rajputana and Jammu and Kashmir all were between Indian territory. Everyone except baloch and north western frontier states (if any), Jammu and Kashmir , Hyderabad(the largest) and junagarh signed the instrument of ascension before 1947 15th August . Junagarh will join after a revolt against pro-Pakistan nawab and invasion. Hyderabad would surrender after invasion later in 1948. Jammu and Kashmir, though strategically important for both had complex situation. It was ruled by a Hindu King Named Maharaja Hari Singh but has a Muslim majority overall. Hari Singh decided to remain independent but faced pressure from both sides. In December 1947, Pakistan launched an invasion and quickly gained ground. Hari Singh , in order to save his regime, asked for Indian help. India put a condition that they will only help if he agrees to join. Hati Singh reluctantly agreed. Indian troops came in time to save the summer capital but cannot push them back out of whole region.
