I know it's not the best tactic to just defend, but I find myself in situations where I have to hold a city anyway, so...
What would be the best defensive general to put in a city? And if I can change whatever skills, what skills would be best for a city defender?
I'm thinking counterattack and revenge is a good combo.. maybe alert as well...
So maybe Haig if switching plain and inspiration for counterattack and revenge? Or keep inspiration and get rid of ambush?
Also, does anybody know if the skills assault, precision strike etc are for counterattack as well or do they only work when I'm attacking? And commander as well? And what about station and Street fighting? It says "increase attack by"... "When fighting in city facilities". But surely those skills must be for counterattack as well when I'm a city...
Thoughts?

Best price performer for that purpose is obviously Macmahon, with Jungle for Revenge.

Macmahon is a beast for defending, however he's not useful in other situations. I would recommend Haig instead of Macmahon since he's more useful in other situations.
But the best generall for defending is Steinmetz, tunnel + assault + street fighting, on a heavy machine gunner and he can hold a city all by himself. Sadly you can't get him.

Ah yes, Macmahon looks really good! I have a bunch of other gens for other purposes, including Robert e Lee and Carol 1. I want pure city defense.. If it's the case that assault doesn't work for counter attacks, I might just switch that for alert as well.
Then skill wise, he could be on cavalry as well, a very versatile city defender.

Dunno why you need a general in the role of city defender, coz militia is all we need for that role. Anyway, the best skill set for a city defender should be: Station/Land fort/Street fighting + Alert + Cover/Ambush + Assault/Precision strike/Salvo + Revenge You may add Inspiration in case of that city would be enveloped/surrounded. And I think it’s better to use a defensive skills general for we can use him in flexible role, not only to be a sitting duck in a city. Any general will be good at defending if he has Alert + Cover/Ambush/Revenge/Counter Attack. It’s better to have only two defensive skills.

NotRandom, Can't buy from Steinmetz? Is there no way to unlock him or many other generals?

You can find an Emperor general, swap his 5 skills, and you just made the best defensive general.
