For all of you who's unwilling to spend cash:
(Do note, this is my first time making guides, or making a long post)

Alternative to Scheer:
Do you really need this guy? Just get Hipper. Even Beatty is better.

Petain's role:
Tanky cavalry killer with an aura
Alternative to Petain:
Criteria: High damage, aura
-Strausenburg, replace ambush for intercept. (5 textbooks)
Defensive formation is not needed for infantry, because artillery and navy have a damage debuff anyways. With mountain fighting, you also have mobility over mountains if you put him on a heavy machine gunner, something Petain can't do. Even if you have Petain, Strausenburg is still worth your medals, since he's the best non-iap infantry general.
-Lee, replace battle array and ambush for infantry commander and plain fighting. (15 textbooks)
I won't do this if I were you, but if you have textbooks to spare, then Lee's a worth try. He does have the highest abilities score after all.
-Boyadzhiev, replace jungle fighting for plain fighting, and you get the same effect as Petain. (5 textbooks)
Strausenburg, but cheaper. However you don't need this guy if you have Strausenburg or Petain.
Note: McArthur can also be a very cheap alternative, but his max rank makes him not worth the textbooks.

Foch's role:
Aura city cracker that can attack again
Alternative to Foch:
Criteria: City cracking, tactics master
-Beseler, replace plain with artillery commander. (5 textbooks)
Salvo + Artillery Commander + Storm, you basically have every artillery skill that guarantees damage against cities. Plus, you have mobility on your side and can move through mountains easily. Another bonus is that no good artillery general have an aura, so there you go.
-Ivanov, replace inspiration with artillery commander. (5 textbooks)
I had a hard time deciding between artillery experts and inspiration, but decided on inspiration. Artillery expert is what makes Ivanov so good. Although this isn't as good as Beseler at cracking cities, it is better overall, due to the fact that Ivanov deals more damage.
Note: Artillery commander isn't really that important. So anything that's decent can serve as a good alternative to Foch, such as Hotzendorf.

Ludendorff's role:
Bringer of death, destroyer of units.
Alternative to Ludendorff:
Criteria: High damage, high abilities score, maximum rank should be king+
-George McClellan, no skills needs to be replaced.
Do I really need to explain? Get him even if you have Ludendorff.
-Stonewall Jackson, station and riding master for cavalry commander and precision strike (15 textbooks)
High damage? Check. Maximum rank emperor? Check. High potential? Check.
Note: Herbert Plumer and Sidney Johnson can also be alternatives, but then you'll end up with another Jackson.
