Which route are you meant to take? It seems every route I go together or split up I get boxed in. What are the objectives???

This turns some of the towers in the yellow area to your side. Wear down and defeat the archers first. Then, rush the minotaur. This turns some mines in the north. Break through the gate in the north. Step on the allied mines to attack the enemies and force the minotaur to detonate the allied mines. Rush the minotaur ASAP.

I've never had to go through the northern wall, he's always come out to meet me after taking on the one in the centre.

I've tried this strategy but yet my team gets walloped by the second minotaur. My team is: Attila, Nobunaga, Barbarossa, Nelson, Li Shimin, and Li Hongzhang all lvl60 with relative low lvl skills.

You need to upgrade those skills, commander & leadership first. Level 6, then 10. Spy is quite useful too.

eeeeef, bring in another melee gen to replace Barbarossa, preferably a cav gen like Saladin or Blücher. One melee gen from each class is too weak to do much here, even if they are commanders. I brought in Bismarck, Li Shimin, Nobunaga Oda, Catherine, Attila and Saladin.

Hannibal's 2nd skill at lvl 10 enables him to be Attila's student who cannot "command". Petain-Babarossa will be the iron wall to tank dmg from the arty and archers in the middle. Pick your preferred class and run with them. I believe I used my ranged units to take out the enemy archers ASAP. Ignore Bismarck and Khalid.

Hannibal with Gungnir is very powerful, but my Hannibal has fully upgraded skills (except the first one, of course).
