Is buying artillery general is necessary, or you can just use free arty gens like Cleopatra or Khalid until getting Bismarck?

I don't really get what it means but currently I'm in medieval age campaign and I don't feel any need using artillery gens cause my other generals that one age above still do decent damage to the fort, but idk if it still good for the next ages campaign.

Probably you don't really need an Artillery general until Gunpowder age. Some special chapters might be an exception though. When you start feeling that walls and HQ are too thick, then it is time to invest in Khalid. LiShimin is an excellent general, but he's one of the most expensive generals in the game. And, truth be told, the difference between him and free generals like Khalid and Bismarck is not that great as the difference between Attila, for example, and free cavalry generals at our disposal. So, to buy an Artillery general is definitely not a top priority.

Khalid really just shines (like Heihachiro) in ArtyCom, or if you have multiple Arty Gens really.

To increase even his own damage by 50 percent is huge. Besides, don't underestimate "spy". Only Nobunaga and Alex have it among top tier generals. So, again, I would prefer a consistent "spy" debuff over a gambling chance of "rumour". It is true we can give a legendary weapon to Cleo to compensate her stats, but I would rather keep them for my main DPS heroes.

He is a free purple general who is already at gunpowder age and until gunpowder age, Alexander should suffice to take down walls.
