Why Holland Smith. Why not O'Connor? Gerdy dislikes Holland Smith. I'm assuming he also dislikes Dougy Mac and anyone else who was asked to do amphib landings late war as well.

He may not be able to win against Yamashita in WC3, and infantry generals were so incredibly disappointing in WC4, but he always has a sense of being legendary. Smith, on the other hand is shorthanded with being a navy/infantry hybrid.

No, Macarthur was able to do it without horrific casualties. I must say though, that I dislike Smith a ton less than Nimitz, whose Idea it was to take those islands. I will give them one thing. They showed the brilliance of Saito, Kuribayashi, and Ushijima, and proved once and for all, that defense in depth is the best. As for Graziani, yes he was miles inferior to Duke D'Aosta, who should probably be a hero to everyone, but is unfortunately never known. He was like the Western conflagration of Rommel made true. Anyhow, sorry, but seriously Graziani was not doing that from the ineptness of himself, but he was saddled with a trash officer corps, unmechanized troops, an economy unprepared for war, a technologically bankrupt military, an idiot as the logistics minister...

I don't use social media outside of this and sometimes reading Quora. You are the first person that i see rarely use social media. And I'm the second one. I browse through Quora regularly (Once in a few days) and another forum except this one.

Also, who wouldn't want a name like "The Pacifier of Fezzan"?

Gerdy dislikes Holland Smith. I'm assuming he also dislikes Dougy Mac and anyone else who was asked to do amphib landings late war as well. No, Macarthur was able to do it without horrific casualties. MacArthur's greatest achievement was the Philippines. At that time he was fighting Tomoyuki Yamashita, who was more used to the expansive land wars in South Asia, where the best thing to do against a numerically superior army was to retreat and retreat until they were caught in a web of troops and can just as easily be despatched. I would say it was Yamashita's choice to withdraw from Manila, than MacArthur's tactical prowess, and he still lost a massive amount of men through months of what Hue would be like in 1967. Yamashita was holed up in North Luzon, where MacArthur pretty much established a frontline, dug in, and didn't confront them. They ended the war like that. As for Smith, he had no expansive island chains to take. He captured Tarawa, the smallest, most heavily defended strip of island at that time, all for an airfield where they could stage their raid on Truk. Iwo Jima was poor judgement by Nimitz when Ogasawara was right there. There was nothing he could do about Iwo. Would you like me to give some more examples? While MacArthur is well recieved for his apparent tactical prowess in The Philippines, while Smith is blamed for the little pockets of hell that was Guadalcanal and Bougainville. I must say though, that I dislike Smith a ton less than Nimitz, whose Idea it was to take those islands. Frank Fletcher gang. but he was saddled with a trash officer corps, unmechanized troops that part is true. His troops were so poorly trained that O'Connor literally just drove up in tanks while they were making breakfast, and every last one of them surrendered. This was at Sollum if you want to fact check it. an idiot as the logistics minister... Ah, Ugo Cavallero, right?
