If you compare to Himmler, almost no one is a nazi or a war criminal. I've been reading about the book "the Banality of Evil" and it's quite interesting how the author explains how Himmler was such a monster. Essentially, he was blaming his victims for his own brutality. For example, when sending jews to the gas chambers, he would justify to himself that: " if only those jews weren't so corrupt, i won't be forced to have them executed." Basically, he knows that what he's doing is evil or atleast atrocious, but he's justifying why he needs to do so in a way that the blame is more on the victims more than on him. Basically, he was hard coping. Which is quite true in most cases, the majority of humanity won't simply think that what they have done might be harmful or evil, but they mask it with some ideal and victim blaming. Doesn't help that humans aren't naturally good and are naturally aggressive. Which is one explanation as some unexpected evil behavior from humans from time to time.
