There is a sense in buying Martel when you have access to his personal weapon. I still have a long way to go. And Totila's royal title is quite low to invest into him heavily. In fact, I agree with nikomachos, you don't need a new general. I have almost every decent f2p general in the game but, most of the time, I still use generals I bought first, because I simply get used to them. I would say if you don’t feel a real need for a new general - don't buy anyone for now just to spend your medals. Upgrade your troops instead, and fully upgrade your first team generals. They will the bulk of your army anyway. |

Eventually, you can get them all since the current game offers enough medals. I'd recommend Simeon first if you still have lots of hero legends and treasure missions unfinished. He does well with Noble cav and can usually kill 1-2 enemy legions right at the start (with his skill and desperate wager for certain terrains). There are bronze generals who have Baldwin's skill so you can test how useful this would be. Stat wise, Roland is stronger than Baldwin and Barbarossa (unless you iap buy their items) so it's all about their active skills. Try Cataphracts. They are squishier than Noble cav but should be able to hit harder. If I start to build up a second charge cav unit it's going to be templars. (Banking on the hope that we might get some fragments in the future and thinking that 1 templar per 10 scrolls should be feasable.)
Cataphracts are on lv6 with the fragments we got for free while my noble cav are close to lv12. At least in the Komnenos campaigns they didn't convince me and changing units in castle will cost gold so I try to that as few as possible. And I don't see why I should divert my daily gold budget to Cataphracts which will only be slightly different.
For me (playing since release of the game) Cataphracts came to late. If someone started today, this could be different but there is still no equivalent to Alfred's raid for f2p.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I will stick to my roster for now, then when new generals unlock (maybe Genghis Khan), I'll buy them
