So should I buy space tech to get the daily tech awards, or not?

I wouldn't recommend space tech until endgame. However if you need tech and you have healthy stock of supplies then go on.

Space Program does nothing good for you beside the right to show it to other people. So I do not recommend building space wonder or upgrading space program in your HQ because it will be a waste of resource.
What you should build early are wonders that give resource (especially medal). Sea City (+30 oil) are not necessary for conquests or campaigns but it is crucial for accumulate supplies challenges. So if you are not doing the challenges soon, you should save up your resources to build other wonders.
