So I have propably asked some of these questions already earlier and some others too, but there seems to be controversial info and many different threads, as well as unanswered questions, so I was hoping it would all be properly assembled here.
1. So first of all, melee inf is supposedly the best naval unit. But do the skills of a unit actually matter in naval warfare? Like, pretty much all melee inf units have at least some protection from archers, and most of the ships attack with arrows, so does their protection work on the sea?
2. Follow-up: since ships attack with arrows, shouldn't archers be the best? Or does any capability matter at sea? (when choosing archer vs. melee inf general on ship)
3. I bought Giovanni while ago, becouse he seems to have very good naval potential when you add navigator with gems to his unique, for example. But if melee inf is superior at sea, was that a mistake? To have ranged gen for sea?
4. And now for the different ships. Though I said most attack with arrows, some higher tier ones have artillery. Is that just a visual effect, or do the attack types differ? (dromon with fire is different of course). Especially the gold-tier artillery warship seems oddly very bad. It only adds +9% naval damage and that is all. Many cheaper to deploy, easier to get etc. lower tier ships are lot, lot better. Is there some hidden mechanic for arty ship that makes it gold-tier?
That is a long list and I may add it later if I forgot something 😁. I hope we all can get good answers here.

1. some skill applies and unit disadvantage to certain unit. 2. no, it depends on your ship and units. 3. maybe? add other unit to counter it. but Giovanni is strong naval commander 4. they differ with damage and skill, that artillery ship is bad, the reason for gold tier is gunpowder.
