The Americans are a different thing. The war was not personal like it was in France and Germany (and by 1915 also UK). The Amis ran into machien fire to gain a little bit of land in one of their first battles for example. The Americans weren't used to trench war as much as the Europeans by 1917. That's one of the reasons the Allies couldn't break through German lines in 1917

Jean Lannes, it may not have been personal and we may have not been accustomed to it after years of experience, but we were the reason the Germans didn't break through the Allied lines in 1917.

I think the Allies might have been able to hold the line for 1917 with some luck. But only barely. Germany would've pushed through in 1918 though
