When it comes to salt, there is no pepper, just salt.
Personally, i believe that its because Mao killed something like 80 million people and is a pretty polarizing figure when it comes to history (Successfully made China into a world juggernaut again after the century of humiliation, but, as afore mentioned, killed 80 million people in the process)
While De Gaulle is also somewhat controversial, definitely not as much so as Mao.

"Had Mao died in 1956, his achievements would have been immortal. Had he died in 1966, he would still have been a great man but flawed. But he died in 1976. Alas, what can one say?"
—Chen Yun, a leading Communist Party official under Mao and Deng Xiaoping.[241]

Easytech is a chinese company. This means that all of their games needs to follow the rules of the chinese government. The chinese government wouldnt allow mao zedong to be weak, in fact they want their hero to be the best general in game. Easytech doesnt want that a general is too OP, which mao zedong wouldve been. So they simply didnt add him in game

I personally don't have a problem with a game that is less premium-oriented

Yes, people will say "Mao is too strong/weak" and start to make it salty. My thought is exactly this.

I'd rather add Vietnam's Vo Nguyen Giap as a general. Nothing really to do with this topic or Zedong, but hey.

One possible reason for him not appearing in 1939 and 1943 would be that the Nationalists and Communist were in a Civil War and put that to the side to fight the Japanese. The Communist plan for WW2 was to 50% get stronger, 40% fight the nationalists and only 10% fight the Japanese. Out of the 7 main battles 6 were fought by the Nationalists. Before the war the Communists were outnumbered 1/30 after the war the Communists were outnumbered 1/3.
Mao wouldn't just not fit into the scenario (because the Communists didn't really fight the Japanese as much as the Nationalists), but he couldn't be there in 1950 & 1960 because he wasn't the direct commander of the "Chinese military" (China technically doesn't have a military. What we call Chinese military is just the Communist Party's armed wing). I don't want to go into even more politics and we should stop with all this salt

It comes to politic topic now, and becomes a little salty. Locking it to avoid more salt.
