So I just got isabella after restarting my game, and was wondering if I should upgrade her or wait for a good general.
Upgrading Isabella would be nice, but she's a free general. I might possibly get Golitsyn or Dobeln from a re-roll soon...

Isabela is the best non-Tier-3 artillery. Upgrade her of you have Cav already

If you can find trainers for sophia, she should be good for either cav or art

I keep hearing about these "trainers". Who are they, and what do they do? (can you tell I'm new to EW4:/)

The general that has a trainer skill (example: cavalry) gives a general you regrouped him on an extra star of that specific class that he was a trainer off. Just an advice: Never waste your medals on rank and nobility on any of your generals. It can all be obtained through farming. You get rank preety fast for dealing large ammounts of damage (machine gun, armored car) For nobility, check the post that Jean Lannes put for farming

So basically any arty/infantry/whatever trainer should do? Since you only have Isabela and Sophia, I'd suggest you go for Sulkowski or Golitsyn (great Cavalry Commanders) and then Trainers

You could also go for Berthier, he is the best cavalry general (against humans) in the game non princess. He does however need like 3500 medals to get so far

Since everybody has a warhorse it's a preety big waste then. Golitsyn costs around 100 medals more than Berthier but Berthier needs 4 cavalry traners. When that sums up you are basically paying like 2000+ medals for A FREE ITEM SPACE WHEN MOVING since you wont need warhorse, but who has 2 move items that give cav +2 movement anyways? I would never farm for Berthier.

Berthier also has 4 trade stars so you won't need Arnold either after 1 regroup
