I'm pretty sure America has SUBdialects. Europe has languages with dialects (Bavarian is a dialect of German, for example) Oh you said subdialects :/ Thats true, im sorry I said American as a whole is a Dialect, which has subdialects

And even within America, there are different (and 90%+ mutually intelligible) subdialects. Southern, New England, and CA are rather different The 5% that aren't intelligible are in the South Yeah, but American English is in my opinion far better than British English. I mean seriously, British English has really funky words imo. Canadian English is like a mix of both, so it results in some really weird occurrences where you'll have a sentence that contains both American and British vocabulary. As someone who learned English in CA, I can tell you that I don't always understand urban New Yorkers, and they won't always understand Californians.

Yeah, I have a friend whose Dad has a really thick Yorkshire accent and I can't understand him half the time.

I find it funny that here in ex-Yugoslavia there are people saying that bosnian, montenegrin, croatian, etc. are languages (if you know one of the serbo- croatian languages you understand at least 90% of all the others), while swiss german, or -italian are almost not understandable by standard german or italian speakers but are still just dialects...

Sadly, the reasons for this are the type of things we do not discuss here on the forum to avoid flame wars (modern ethnic tensions). Sorry

Uch, I know. Like some federal states of Germany people cant understand each other because ones from Bavaria and ones from Hamburg. I know we have a unified dialect but its still a hassle

Hmmm what weird about Australia...we have our own slang for things that no one else understands (actully I barely understand Australian slang and I have lived here my whole life). Something else some people are suprised about is most of use sound NOTHING like we are depicted in the movies (a few do but most don't) the 'Australian Accent' is mostly a Hollywood creation, some of us have a bit of an accent but I haven't met anyone with as strong an accent we are depicted to have. I myself apparently have a 'British Accent' (though I don't think I do) which I correct and say 'There is no such thing as a British accent. British is the English, Scottish and Welsh who all have thier own laugages' sometimes I even add "There isn't even such thing as an Englsih accent, as someone from West London could sound different to someone in East London" but I digress...
