s/l - it's a phrase/acronym I keep seeing on here, but I can't work out what it iis.

It means save/load
You save right before an attack and load the save repeatedly until you get a result you are satisfied with

yea, you do this if your general has assault art to activate it or when the enemy general's defense art is activated
