What should I do with my gold stars? Sell them or upgrade troops?

sell them using a general which has 4 or 5 trade stars, you can get 4 medals for each one i think. You can sell the majority of your stars as you won't need them till late game where you need to unlock some troops for the last 2 campaigns.

Sell with 5 star trade general. Save some for guards in Eastern Overlord and a lot of stuff in Rise of America

Depends. A) If you can grind medals/have lots of them/hacked version, upgrade your units. B) If you find it hard to grind, do what Jean-Luc Picard does. C) If you are lazy, like me, do nothing. Don't be me.

I gave the bare minimum you'll need to upgrade. Unlocking MGs too is also helpful

MG's and battleships and Armored cars, only ever unlock do not upgrade.
On the mission Battle of Austerlitz in Coalition campaign you get Peter the Great, move him to Vienna and save so you have an easy way to sell stars for the most return, then you can do as you wish!
