In hold the ground its the target to defend your city or position. Focus on this target only.
Try to move all your current units towards that city and surround it, or make sure the enemy cant surround it by moving your units the following:
If you have a 2 range unit try to put that one in the city.
Dont buy units and dont make air strikes. Use your money to buy units inside cities with the largest amount of health.
Dont attack with your units unless the enemy cant attack back. Use your units as a shield. To block the city.
Your general(s) should be assigned in the city itself. Since their health makes sure the city wont be blitzed.
