Even I don't know about him. There is actually Lt. General of Iraq. There is also a popular general of India named Mahdi. Also for war there is some reference of siege of 'mahdist' Sudan in the late nineteenth century. He could be an 'imaginary general'. But it would be interesting to know if he really 'exist'!

Muhammad is the most common name in the World, esp. many Muslim nations, so it's not much of a surprise to see a lot of Muhammads in the Middle East
