It is set up with a map of China split into 15 or so regions. Your empire would start at one of them and the region would be filled with little battles. It started at 3 and each region added on more battles in order to capture the region. It was basically a ton of mini campaign missions.

It is also how you got the princesses. You would gain them automatically at a certain point in the conquest.
