What time period is this again? If it's WW1 onward I think Erich Maria Remarque would be good. All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the most powerful and moving books I have ever read. So we have decided, but Want do you want me to start with a war story writer or odd and childish song writer "WAR! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?!" A bloody good story. So yeah, I choose war.
