I was wondering about the Great Pyramids. I know that they supply one medal per eighty days, but is that enough to keep me going with medals, or should I keep trying to earn more and not rely on the pyramids much?

For sure it is worth to build them. From all campaigns, conquests, challenges and missions you don't get enough medals to buy 6 best academy gens and promote them to marshals, but you can build ECs too, which are much more expensive.
