As simple as the question sounds.
Option 1: Marie Antoinette for "letting them eat cake"
Option 2: Gaius Julius Caesar for getting peer-pressured even though he was an emperor? Seriously?
Option 3: Leon Trotsky for not declaring Stalin's treason.
Option 5: Albert Schlieffen for not considering British ties to Belgium.

Definitely #5 easily avoided... SMH
But btw, I don't think #1 was an actual quote properly attributed to her. A lot of things said about her was just propaganda meant to slander the monarchy and some of it was completely off-base. Despite this, many people still had believed what pamphlets said about MA and made her out to be a villain larger than life.

I just wanted to work that saying into one of my posts. In reality, Marie Antoinette was probably the smarter person in her marriage pact. I don't think Louis XIV was close to being smart whatsoever...

Sorry to intervene , but 1. Phrase Qu'ils mangent de la brioche is a myth. There is only one specific historical mention. It was Rousseau's first autobiography (yes, the man was shy and had two autobiographies). First six books (where this phrase appears) were written in 1765, when Marie Antoinette was nine years of age. Well, stupid child could say this too, but... no. Bread shortages began in Paris well after that period... And one more thing... Rousseau simlpy said "one princess" (without mentioning Marie Antoinette). So as allways, every revolution has its own mythology... 2. Ceasar never was roman emperor. Caesar held both the dictatorship and the tribunate. Octavian was the founder of the Roman Principate and considered the first Roman emperor. Caesar was poclaimed as Imperator by his legions, but that was common practice and it has nothing to do with official power. 3. Trotsky was People's Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs of the Soviet Union. That means minister of defence. He simply could not proclaime someone be a traitor. He had lost even control over military forces in 1924. 4. Most historians agree, that violation of Belgian borders was pretext but not the main reason for England's entry into the war. The main reason was growing naval power of Germany. In fact, in english war plans was violation of Belgian neutrality if german attack on France was inevitable (Royal Navy have to blockade not only German ports, but Belgian ports as well)

A little exaggeration makes things more interesting though.

Saying Caesar was an Emperor is falsehood, not exaggeration. Period.
