Well given the fact that the lecture for Interbellum is nearly completely finished, Im creating this lecture page so that I don't have to deal with the intro stuff tomorrow. In this, we will be talking about one of the most important events of the modern world:The Cold War. This one is going to be different than the Interbellum lecture, however, in the sense that I am receiving the aid of Suvorov in this lecture. Here is the initial lecture outline until Suvorov and I agree on the outline: -Origins of conflict between Capitalism and Communism -The World after WWII (Page 1) [Suvorov] -American backed Coups (Page 2) [Suvorov] -The Different major Crises (Page 2) [General William T. Sherman] -Proxy Wars (Page 2) [General William T. Sherman] -The Space Race -Détante -The end of the Soviet Union Dont be surprised if this stuff changes as Suvorov and I decide on the definitive version of this outline. {Parenthesis=Which page the lecture is on, Brackets=Who made the lecture for that unit}

No Arms Race or the Space Race? Those are prime reasons for the collapse of the SU, and will thus be out there. Most of the space race is separate from their collapse, however, so idk what I'll,do with that stuff.

Also, we shall know that Pakistan actually exists because we'll be talking about the Indo-Pakistani wars even though it wasn't really a proxy war. Why?! Simple! I think they're interesting and thus will get mention near the end.

This is going to be what I will cover: -Origins of conflict between Capitalism and Communism -The World after WWII -Détante -The end of the Soviet Union The origins of conflict between Capitalism and Communism is going to be on this thread in about half an hour (quality time) and the rest will follow this week First, we will look at the two major conferences between the Allies The World after WW2 (just because it's more interesting):
In Febraury 1945, Churchill and Roosevelt travelled to Yalta near the Black Sea to talk to Stalin. There, important decisions were made. Churchill and Roosevelt allowed that the countries which the Red Army had "liberated" to belong to the sphere of influence of the Soviet-Union. They also agreed to Stalin, the annexation of Eastern Poland and the Baltic States. The Allies would occupy the rest of Germany, eacht with an occupation zone of their own. Berlin would be located in the Soviet Zone, but would be seperated into a Russian, American, British and French part.
The Yalta conference was the last time Stalin and the Western Leaders spoke to eachother in a reasonable atmosphere. Afterwards, the mutual distrust was high.
The Potsdam Conference Nine weeks after the German capitulation, they met again in Potsdam, near Berlin. The atmosphere was now icy. Roosevelt's succesor (Truman) did not trust Stalin at all. Stalin had promised to start democratic elections in Poland. Truman blamed Stalin that nothing was being done about this. Truman also told him that he had tested a new super weapom, the atomic bomb. Stalin already new about this because of his spies and said he hoped he would use it well.
Containment This was the start of the Cold War. A large part of the worldThis was the start of the Cold War. A large part of the world was divided into two Blocs: The Eastern Bloc under the leadership of the USSR and the PRC (People’s Republic China) and the West under the leadership of the USA. They thought the system of the enemy was evil and their own the best for mankind. They were also convinced that the other wanted world dominance.
While Stalin expanded his powers wherever he could, the Americans maintained a policy of containment. They offered political and economical help to countries they thought where threatened by communism and invaded or staged coups in countries which where communist. The Americans were especially worried about Western Europe. This devestated continent would soon become coummunist if nothing was done. This resulted in the Marshall plan: The Americans pumped billions of dollars into the European economy.,
In 1947, opression in Eastern Europe was becoming increasingly tougher. Stalin let the coumminists stage a coup in Chechoslovakia, the only country in their sphere of influence where the communists didn’t hold all the power. In June 1948, Stalin blocked off the road to West-Berlin. In this way, he hoped to control all of the city. However, the Americans decided to supply Berlin through air. In May 1949, Stalin lifted the blockade.
NATO and the Warsaw pact A few weeks earlier, the US and Western Europe had made a military pact: the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Shortly after this, the Western occupation were merged and the West Germans were allowed to have their own state: The Federal Republic of Germany. In the Soviet zone, the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) was founded. Also, a counterpart of NATO was formed: the Warsaw Pact. This completed bloc formation in Europe. Eastern Europe and Western Europe were from then on divided by an impenetrable border: The Iron Curtain.
Next time: The Berlin Wall!
