Dieppe was a stroke of military brilliance, and anyone who says otherwise is ignoring the facts! For the Germans or the British, because one of them lost the battle drastically and the other shouldn't have won, but by luck they did. And poor 'ol Mountbatten got roasted since then.

Yup it cost the Germans one of the best equipped and trained armies they had in Russia, and yet Hitler insisted they hold out He thought Göring is an air wiz Yeah, and he miscalculated the air-supply limits. Also he thought retreat=failure. A lot of us (like me) would've done the same. We would have believed our "great commanders" such as Manstein & Göering would've been able to save Paulus's army... until reality catches up. By then, Paulus had no way out, no help & plays a crucual role in politics. Obviously, to prevent political suicide, Hitler & most other people (mainly politicians) would've told Paulus to never surrender as well.
