That is a fair point. Imo pontiaowski or lannes is a great buy in that situation. Lannes is poniatowski without fireproof (not that big of a loss tbh) for mass fire, the best intantry skill in the game. Even though lannes will be super expensive to train, he can potentially be the best infantry and artillery general in the game (3 of the best skills active) while also being an extremely fast cavarly general. His output is massive to say the least on anything. But you can also give poniatowski a snair drum and have him be amazing on everything. The other option imo is berthier. Berthier is easily better than dombrowski, radetsky, paget, murat, lassalle (sucks, even paget is an upgrade). He has the speed of davout and the consistent output of dombrowski. All that needs to be done is training him which is a huge pain. I see what you are saying though. Berthier has been discussed here back and forth. But what do 4600 trainer costs really mean: 1 war horse 1 snare drum 1 Napoleonic code 1 +6 tent 1 horse artillery 1 +6 powder 1 saddle 1 pistol 1 boots 1 propeller ...put the equivalent in only one general but still need or want all of the above. That’s Berthier fully build, only for the benefit of having a Golitsyn and one hex more on heavy cavalry (with a second saddle) Even without him I’ve spent more time grinding than for any other game before. He’s too sophisticated for me. Totally agree bout Lannes/Pon. I got Lannes during ROA when I felt the need of another Infantry hybrid. While geography is a nice-to-have, leadership is what makes him so valuable and compensates his lack of attack skills. In crowded battlefields he’s even better than Victoria. Not a good first buy due to his turtle speed but at this point I already had the items to make him move. It really depends on your own style of playing. If you have enough medals for Berthier, get Berthier. If you do not, get Golitsyn.

Exactly, gudin, I’m just talking about MY willingness and MY cost-benefit-calculation. I’d never dare to call anybody foolish for thinking different.

Not a good first buy due to his turtle speed but at this point I already had the items to make him move. Berthier is horrible to grind not because of his one star in cavarly. That is very easy to fix. Its because of his one star movement. Diez the movement trainer is the only movement trainer in the first tier and he costs 540 medals. So not only is the spin (the thing for changing the general selection in the tavern mode) a pain, he is also expensive too. But berthier does also have 3 training stars too. Golitsyn, Murat, Lassalle, and Paget are automatically inferior. He also starts out with 4 trading stars which is very good as he can capture cities easier, Thats why getting nelson is smart as an iap. He makes the battle of trafalgar grind much easier. Basically, with him and kate, you can easily obtain up to 500 medals in an hour. Also if you think Berthier is bad, making lannes and artillery and cavarly hybrid is much worse let me tell you. Lannes turtle speed is horrible, but unlike suvorov, once you fix it he becomes a fantastic general. Also if you don’t want a turtle speed general, Washington is a good alternative to lannes. The other option is archuke charles/massena for cavarly. They have fantastic training stars. But there are better choices imo.

But he NEEDS a snare drum as his training stars are non existent. Dombrowski is the best iap if you want a pure cavarly general otherwise. He is cheap, has good training stars, and is just good overall. Berthier is very expensive but so worth it if you do get him maxed. Essentially what I am saying is buying nelson then getting berthier will result in absolute amazing generals very early in the game.

True.At my POV,I never really bother to buy berthier and nelson(tho I considered before)but still made it far using Lannes Davout Washington and Golitsyn.Iw was pure fun as all of them r hybrids(Davout stands out the most)..Princesses r enough for navy if you invest into their navy stars esp Sophia..You can choose whatever way you want as the generals selection here r more versatile

I mean i beat the game just with davout. Having washington and lannes as well would be heavenly. No need for victoria I guess! Do you even use her anymore?

So if you wanna climb that mountain you should get him as first buy. So you can concentrate only on training him before you get princesses or other gens who also need work. At start you don’t have a war horse and no item buyer so his geography and trading stars come in handy. And in early campaign missions only 2-3 stars in cavalry make him efficient enough. Diez appears so seldom he should be bought whenever available. Even when you have to sell items to pay him (only if you have a 5* trader). It may take ages until you see him again.

Thats why getting nelson is smart as an iap. He makes the battle of trafalgar grind much easier. Basically, with him and kate, you can easily obtain up to 500 medals in an hour. Of course I use the Trafalgar grind. (...all gens surround Nelson’s Banner, all other ship withdraw, press the button for AI turn and just watch it...). At early stage with any general, just to rise the health of my ships I stopped when all gens were dead. Now I have Kate, Sophia, Victoria and Lan, all with high Navy stars and items. The average is let’s say 15medalls each game in about 3 min. That’s about 300 in an hour. How would you get 500?

The trick is to make a safe right before round 14, where the double debuff happens and then to begin the slaughter.

Ok, I’ll try the difference. Do you actively attack or just follow the fleeing ships to retaliate their attacks?

Finally it’s not your generals skills that make you win but how you use them. Even the commonly not recommended ones have at least one quality. If you bought one by mistake you need to use his strengths and compensate his weaknesses. (Like you do with default generals in game.) In the end even a gen with no specific skill but 5* on a unit, trained to 150/10 with items can help a lot. A good skill set just makes more fun and a smoother walkthrough. Weaker gens need more pairing, support, terrain advantage etc.

Tolerable is a bit insulting for the old output-hero, isn’t it?😄 Of course it’s ridiculous when elite-of-the-elite Victoria can get confused by a simple light cavalry. Since I don’t have Nelson I already need to protect my artillery from horses. Artillery isn’t made for infight anyway. If it happens, no problem, with S&L they only take damage but don’t cry. You can’t have Leadership on everyone, e.g.nobody misses it on Davout. A leveled mix of skills can cope with all situations. I mostly split Lan and Lannes to have one leadership for each front.
