@ancient regime Lasale is tier 3 so an emblem general.
Many of tier 3 are not good enough for sure and Moreau is a perfect general, but the thing is Moreau has easy non-tier 3 alternatives. That's not the case for Lasale, you cannot easilly get a a non-emblem replacement for a general like him who is also a perfect stat general.

Since the list of good starter generals is already mentioned, so I will share my generals progression. - I started off with 2 artillery and one infantry: Carteaux, Kutaizov, Hull. - Regrouped Carteaux to Sophia: Sophia, Kutaizov, and Hull. - Regrouped Kutaizov to Isabela: Sophia, Isabela, and Hull. - Added Kate as my navy general: Sophia, Isabela, Hull, Kate. - Added Sakurako as my cavalry: Sophia, Isabela, Sakurako, Hull, Kate. - Regrouped Hull to Lan. Change Sakurako's role to infantry general: Sophia, Isabela, Sakurako, Lan, Kate. - Added Ney as my cavalry general. Sophia, Isabela, Sakurako, Lan, Ney, Kate. - Added Dobeln as my infantry general. Sophia, Isabela, Sakurako, Dobeln Lan, Ney, (Kate). - Added Victoria as my infantry general. Sophia, Isabela, Victoria, Dobeln Lan, Ney, (Kate).
I do not buy emblem so this is probably the best I have. I think it's a good idea to get a few good generals then play conquests to get princesses. They are good and free. I use Sophia, Kate, and Sakurako to the last campaign.

Worth remembering is that items can make a huge difference in generals performance so if you try a campaign general that you dont own he will most likely have bad items,no items or the wrong type of items and so perform much worse than if you own him and have him equipped with the best items.

What about Sulkowski? 4* cavalry w/ strike, spy and cav trainer - in my polish conquest he seems to be quite deadly when using guards cav.
Oh and golitsyn is in conquest America 1812

Lasalle is a tier 1 general. Also, Try to get Golitsyn since he's a very good starting general. Put him on Armored Car lvl 2 along with Dobeln on lvl 2 machine gun. They level up pretty fast and do a lot of damage once they reach higher lvl. I've seen Golitsyn do about 100 damage to Desaix in one shot.

My first general was golitsyn, and he is very strong. Sulkowski is also useful because he has cav trainer so when you get lan, you can regroup him into her. Instead, you can try to do conquest and get sophia straight away. She is the easiest to get but is very good, don't underestimate her.

True. I have a guide for getting Sophia initially. If you use a general of your own, you follow that guide, sans tavern guys
