Despite not being German, I really like the IS-2 Model 1944. It was equipped with a D25-T 122 mm gun, a DShK machine gun, 3 DT machine guns (DP machine guns but with bigger magazines) and had excellent armor. Not many German tanks could outgun the 122 mm cannon of the IS-2, but many tanks could knock out the IS-2.
In May of 1945, 2 were captured by Wehrmacht. Unlike the captures of the T-34 tank, the captures of the IS-2 didn't help out in the German war effort. The T-34 however saw action on the German side (it was called by the Germans as Panzerkampfwagen T-34 747(r)). Swatstikas was placed on the German captured ones to avoid confusion.

Personally, the Germans made my favourite tanks of WW2. Since I was little, I was impressed by the nice (as I consider it) design of the Tiger and Panther, and I was very happy when I found out that in my national Military Museum is located a Panzer IV used by the Romanian army during the war. Eventually, when I've seen it, I was impressed by its details and how well it survived after 75 years. But there are also peolple who say that these were only just overrated, and in fact were preety weak. What do you think about the German tanks as vehicles, design or at least personal prefference? Look at it this way, any tanks that actually could compete directly in 1v1 started to appear in late 50ties and were built either from German tanks or by German engineers, basically almost every big achievement during/after ww2 was made by German engineers/scientists, technically stealth fighters are still made on the same design as gean prototype, rockets use the same aerodynamic design as V2, tanks are designed after german tanks, nuclear power plants still works on German concepts, I could count on, but I won't... ok not every German engineer/scientists was German, in fact quite a lot of them came from Baltics or other occupied contries at that time... German war machine made engineering progress more in 4 years, than it had for last century I agree france did have better tanks with better armou and guns but they were used to support infantry instead of an indipendant divison as the germans and also they were spread on the front. The only succesful french tank attack was made by De Goul but the Luftwaffe destroyed their tanks. Also hitler knew he didnt have enough man and resources like the russians so instead of building a lot of tanks they budet a better one to outgun the T-34 . The tigers had a longer range so to get near them in order for the shells to be effective would come at a great cost. The pa ther was a cheaper version and it had the shape just like the T-34 so the shell would bounce.

I would add that the role of Assault Guns and Tank destroyers is often underrated. Let's not forget that Stug 3/4 was the most popular and mass-produced vehicle in Germany during the war: STUG3/4 - 11500 PzM3 - 4500 PzM4 - 6800 PzM5 (Panther) - 5800

I agree they were an important element in the German army. They were cheaper and easuer to produce, and they were very effective on the battlefield. I think in late war, the germans relied very much in their tank destroyers, if I remember right.

Those were engaged in the first stage of the war but in france they showed weakness against the superior french and british tanks, both in armoir and in firepower. Superior german tactics and air support from stuka divers made them succeed. Till the pzkw IV came along to make a difference.
