You can't really save your money for a discount Rommel as his missions require tank generals. Guderian seems to be the obvious choice here. Messe+Leeb combo -or even just Leeb or Messe- is okay if you aren't that skilled.

Normally, most players go for a Messe+Leeb combo, then choose to save for either Guderian or Konev first (depends if you're better at using arty or tanks). For me, I went with Nimitz, Rokossovsky then Rommel. To finish all of Rommel's missions, you need Guderian & gens with minimum lvl 3 Rumour (normally, they are Konev & Leeb). I didn't save for Rundstedt as a pure inf gen is still relatively weak compared to other pure gens, so I chose to use Konev as inf gen (since he's an arty-inf hybrid gen)

But i still think Runstedt can be used to quickly seize cities with mechanized infantry in conquests. Nothing more, though.

Have you done hard missions? Have you done conquests in 1939 for 1, 2 , and 3 star countries? Those are some good ways to get medals.

Seems like you still have time to save for Guderian or Rommel. I think you made a mistake by buying Bock instead of Messe or a cheaper Silver gen but the best thing you could do right now is get the discounts for Rommel and or save up for Guderian. For you second choice, Vatutin is a good pick. I went my second play through with only Rommel and Graziani so there are plenty of possible combinations. Now for Artillery, Leeb has always covered up for me. Badoglio was also a blessing in the European and Pacific campaign but he is weaker in Cold War. You can maybe save up for Konev. Infantry generals are mostly useless in WC4, but for excellent picks you can go for Yamashita or Rundstedt, but if you're looking for a good cheap gen Mannerheim is your man. For Navy, Nimitz is an excellent first choice, but I have always admired Nagumo and even kept him for my entire play through. Mountbatten is also a good choice for a navy gen, even though he is pricy and not in my to-buy list.

For me i saved up for vatutin first, and he was my best buddy till I saved up for yamashita, these two work well as I can use vatutin in a 3 stack heavy as the main offensive force, and any infantry harassing him can be taken out easily with a 4 stack motorised infantry or a commando yamashita. I'm aiming for konev next, as he's crucial in winning 1 and 2 star countries in 1943, and then yamamoto or nimitz would be great for navy. Guderian is too overpriced but hes good... so I will wait to get him much later first

Is it better to have 3 tank generals or 3 arty generals. I have guderian and rommel but i feel like one more tank gen would be welcomed. Im not sure if vatutin or rokossovsky is better, or maybe there is a third option ? If i would buy another arta general i would probably get leeb. I have konev and yamamoto or rundested (depending if im using ships or not).

Normally, we go for 3 tanks, 2 arty, 1 navy. 3rd tank gen typically can be Rommel or Vatutin, but I heard of players using Timoshenko to play before. 2 arty gens can be Leeb + Konev. Normally for navy, Nimitz is recommended, then Kuznetsov is a 2nd navy gen for those who want him.
