This guy's really good if you put him in the right place. Massena go make the first attack, Karl go find some trees and flanking, and it's him take over cities and facilities

I really hate how gates health is only 30%. It might be worth upgrading his health to 35%. And he is ok. On par with the blue tier generals such as Eugene, Soult, and Wilhelm III. He just dies so fast, so definitely needs a healing item and the health upgrade. Still, not bad. But you will need to invest around 500 medals into this guys health, and some for items in order to make him good.
A good early game general, but he will get outdone pretty quickly by purple generals such as Milos, Rudolf, Grant, and Lannes.

Gates is a good general but unfortunately he does not reach the end of the game.

I love gates, hes a great starting general, I actually gave him a Knife, which increases his damage, and he is always hitting 70's and higher

I gotta say, if you played with iaps, you really never get to enjoy the true power of gates. You absolutely have to upgrade his hp to 35% and give him a good item. He has quite good skills, good damage, and is just a pretty strong general with a healing item.
He is an amazing general to beginning farming netherlands 1798 with due to his excellent skill combination in defending cities. Probably the best city defender you will have till you purchase massena like I did
