Yeah Old Guard seem OP to me as well. For cavalry normal Heavy Cavalry seem great for cav generals. Cossacks look strong if you have both pop upgrades and you face a lot of enemies...you can lots of free or almost free damage with their 2 square area attack. Don't forget the Death Hussars who have a better special ability IMO cuz they can attack units behind them... I don't see anyone else mentioning the Death Hussars??? Why is that? Are they just a bad unit or what? I think the Death Head Hussars cost effectiveness is very lacking. They demand a less preferable upgrade path (light cav) plus very expensive and very situational Population upgrade. Heavy Cav will always smash them tete-a-tete, and there is not always situation which allows you to hit two units in row. When you have a Death Head Hussar attacking a strong enemy general or spending turn to kill a unit in a city and then can't capture, you will remember the Heavy Cavalry.

They aren't that good since you'll be upgrading heavy cavalry rather than light, and even if you did upgrade light, they still are lack luster. Can't hold a candle to a Mamluk cavalry. Mamluks are really strong btw, pretty much heavy cavalry on steroids.
