Alright.
Football (American) in a nutshell: There is a 100 yard field with a 10 yard box at either end. 2 teams go against each other to throw or run the ball down the field. Unlike Rugby, the game is not one continous play. When a ball carrier is tackled, the play ends and there is a huddle for the next play.
There are 22 people on the field at once. 11 on defense, 11 on offense. The offense tries to get the ball to the 10 yard box (called the endzone) to score. If they reach it, it's called a touchdown. Each touchdown is worth 6 points. After a touchdown you can kick a PAT which is like a field goal for 1 extra point or go for 2 points with another offensive play, but that's a last resort tactic.
Offense includes: Quarterback: Throws the ball and hands it to the running back while also calling audibles (play changes) at the line of scrimmage.
Running back: Takes the ball from the QB to run it up the field. Can also be a reciever on some plays. Sometimes he will protect the QB from the defense.
Wide Recievers: They will run routes and recievers passes from the QB. These can be 5 yard passes or a 60 yard hail mary down the field.
Tight End: They can either play as a reciever or as a run blocker, allowing the RB to get yards.
Offensive line: Protects the QB from the defensive line.
The defense includes: Defensive Line: the lifeblood of the defense. They stop runs and try to hit the QB and take him down.
Linebackers: They normally play in the middle of the field to defend passes or tackle ball carriers
Corner backs: They chase the Recievers to prevent a pass. Skilled CB's can get interceptions as well.
Safeties: Generally play deep down field to cover deep passes.
Defense can either play in zone coverage where everybody protects a certain part of the field, or man coverage where the CB's and Linebackers go 1v1 against recievers.
That's basic stuff.

Defense can also Blitz which is where they rush the QB to try and get a sack (a tackle behind the line of scrimmage)

Football is a very strategical sport. Oh I forgot the most crucial part!
The offense has 3 downs or chances to gain 10 yards. If they blow all 3 chances they now are on 4th down and can choose to go for it or to punt. Going for it is risky because if you don't get the 10 yards, the enemy offense will get the ball from where you last had it. Punting is just kicking it down the field to give it to the other team.

Very well done, Mountbatten, you should join the analysts at ESPN. I wish. The best life ever: At age 21 join the NFL. At age 35 retire and work for your team as am executive. At age 40-50 become head coach of that team. Age 50 and up become an NFL analyst.

As I eat my vanilla drumstick ( no nuts, I don't like nuts) and watch the Texans and patriots game, I ponder irrelevant yet puzzling things...like would a masochist enjoy being in hell? Who would win if Obama and Putin went head to head if they had their best players in every sport play against each other?? Will the fantasies depicted in books, cartoons, and our imaginations come to fruition???... I gotta stop eating these.

Today was a good day. Each of my 3 teams secured a victory. The Panthers blew out Atlanta 38-0. My Jaguars defeated the Colts 50-16. And my Raiders just barely took down Denver 15-12. Excellent.
