You cannot get a palace in the first round, but in the second or third you can and the saving on the 10-15 (heavy) cav units was huge.
While I still need around 500k gold for all unit upgrades, 20k medals to uprade my top 8 generals and still use one free general, I am already top11 on conquest 1798 and top15 on conquest 1812. Building a palace early on, spaming heavy cav with cav generals is the best strategy that I know of so far and with the all the upgrades I still needed to grind I would have been able to reach top 3, but with the new update installed, players with the old version of the game will have it much easier.
I don't see any buffs in the new update that make it easier to get a new high score on conquest. I guess for casual players it nice to be able to use a princess as a general, but non of the princesses is a top 8 general for any 1 star country. They are decent, but there is no situation, were you want them instead of ie. Karl, Mural, Napoleon or Nelson.
Yes builiding palaces is slightly cheaper than before, but with Maria's huge nerf I don't think it makes sense to build one anymore. As far as I see lvl 1, lvl 2 forts still costs the same, country tech upgrades still costs the same in conquest, so I assume the cheaper price is only for challenge and campaign mode.
As I said, andrei is top 3 and he can easily reach top 1 if using dimiss trick (which i think the 1st use to get 260k pts), and don't focus too much on princesses.
It may be a nerf and a difficulty but it's also a chance to improve your tactic skill if you are hardcore player. Have fun!
